I own an IBM ThinkPad T30 Type 2366-81U

P4-M 1.8GHz (512KB), upgraded to 512MB RAM, 40.0GB HDD, 8x-3.3x DVD-ROM, USB 2.0

My goal is to make a backup (or image copy) of my internal harddrive onto another internal HD mounted in an external USB case.

If needed, I plan to recover by simply moving the harddrive from external USB drive into ThinkPad T30 laptop. I don't want to run BIOS setup to update HD specs while swapping harddrives.

On IBM's website, the parts list shows...
ASM P/N 08K9687 and FRU P/N 08K9683

Inside of my machine...
ASM P/N 92P6331 and FRU P/N 92P6332
It is an IBM -- not Hitachi, not Toshiba

I ran a search on IBM's website and found that 92P6332 supercedes 08K9683, so it looks like everything matches.

Now, onto shopping for an IBM Travelstar 40GB HD - P/N 92P6332 (with caddy) and a USB 2.0 external HD housing.

Powered-up my ThinkPad -- pressed [F1] for IBM BIOS Setup Utility
[StartUp][Boot][Hard Drive]

There are NO Cyl/Head/Sec parameters. Just IC25N040ATCS04-0-(PM),
and I don't think that I can change that.

I shutdown the machine and remove the Harddrive once again.

16383CYL. 16HEADS. 63SEC/T

How did the IBM BIOS learn the Model No. of my harddrive?

I have no idea what brand of external USB case that will work with an IBM TravelStar HD. I have considered placing the back-up HD in the UltraBay location of my DVD/ROM drive. I think that I would prefer a USB case, instead. Someone please point me in the right direction to purchase the correct external USB case that will work for my application.

I don't know if this is going to help, but I will tell you what I do. I have a IBM R31 ThinkPad of which I have upgraded the orginal IBM 20gb hard drive to a Hitachi 5400RPM 30gb drive.

I'm a firm believer of multiple backups for multiple purposes. There are two basic backup needs. Data file recovery and system recovery. File recovery happens when you invertently DELETE or CORRUPT one or more data files. You need to have an easy means to restore these files. This is usally accomplished from performing a Image copy to the source drive. The other recovery assumes that your hard drive DIES - Kaput ! Here you need a complete backup CLONED image of your existing drive to be able to recover.

A cloned image is sector by sector copy of your souce hard drive. What this means is that the cloned target drive, can replace the source drive and become a new replacement drive. A image backup of the source drive is compress image of the source drive and is usally placed in one or more targe files. The entire drive image can be recoverd or just a single file.

Most backup/recovery software usally will perform these two different types of backups. I happen to use ACRONIS True Image backup software.

Next what do I do for backups.

I purchase a standard IBM 4200RPM 30gb drive and a hard drive and a caddy for my ultrabay. I also purchase a 2.5" USB 2.0 drive enclosure in which I placed my old 20gb hard drive.

Once a month I perform a DISK to DISK CLONE from my source drive to my ultrabay drive. This gives me a bootable drive in case I experience a catastrophic error. This copy since it is on the IDE channel, is extremely fast and this clone completes in less than 15min.

Then what I usally do is perform a image copy of the source drive. This is performed to external USB drive. One thing that I didn't mention earlier is that the image copy lets you perform incremental backups ie: only backup data that has changed. This significantly reduces the time it takes to perform the image backup.

So what this gives me is a means to recover from any disaster very quickly. If I have a hard disk failure, I replace the HD from the caddy to the thinkpad main disk. Boot from this cloned backup, then proceed to restore from the image backup (if needed) any files that require that they be up to date.

I hope this helps on a stratagy for your backup need.s

You can make a Rescue & Recovery image onto both your internal HDD, and also an external USB HDD if you wish.

All you had to do was Google the FRU part number 92P6332. Besides, the SATA drive is not used in ThinkPads until model T43 (the T30 is older than that).

The drive in the picture you posted above is a mini-IDE (PATA) interface.

I was wrong. The T43 has a SATA controller, but a PATA hard drive. Sorry for the misinformation.

But you are not exactly correct either...........

If you check the Tabook, the Z60t was the first ThinkPad that used a SATA hard drive. According to the Tabook, the Z60t came out in Sept. 05. The Z60m came out in Oct. 05, and the T60, T60p, X60, & X60s came out in Feb. 06. All these models use a SATA hard drive.

I can't find it on IBM's website, but Google results show several stores
selling around $70. It is 4200 rpm.

I would recommend getting at least a 5400 RPM drive. It really doesn't matter what brand you get. You just need one the same physical size and IDE (PATA). IBM uses drives from various manufacturers - Hitachi (TravelStar), Fujitsu, Toshiba, and maybe some others.

For some reason, the Z60x models are not listed at the bottom of the page. Someone needs to update it.

I'm not sure about other models, but I know that the Hitachi 5k80 5400rpm drive has an 8mb cache.

Over the years, my experience has been that one of the biggest improvements in PC performance was the increase from 2mb cache in hard drives to 8mb cache. I think that the 2mb cache was a bottleneck in PC systems at the time that the 8mb cache drives first came out (several years ago).

I'm pretty sure that the 400% improvement in cache size makes more of a difference than these much smaller increases in rotational speed.

So, look up the details on the web of any drive you are buying to make sure that it is not a 2mb cache drive.
