ThinkVantage System Update: unable to connect

#1 Post by larryu » Tue May 30, 2006 2:14 pm

When I attempt to update, I get a message "Unable to connect to the package content server." This may be due to the free, Beta Windows Defender's enhanced firewall, but it does not typically interfere with downloads and I can't figure out how to customize it for ThinkVantage. I have no other firewalls running. Any insights would be appreciated. I just downloaded this utility and would like to be able to use it.

I had the same thing... ended up uninstalling it. Went back to Software Installer. That is my 'fix'.

It detects my model number and starts the update, but then fails.

I get the same error on my 2373 model TP42 - but the same program works perfectly on my 2379 model TP42. So perhaps it hasn't been enabled yet for the 2373 and some other series??

Thanks! I forgot to mention that my Thinkpad is an R52, and I think the # is 1860.

I did try this with a LAN connection--I'm usually wireless--and again got the same result. I'd like it to work because I know I have some updates. I manually found that I needed an updated driver for the wireless when Fn F5 didnt work for me and told me to update; with the new driver, it works fine.

This is a nice feature of the Thinkpad--if it would only work!

I figured this out--it might be of help to someone

I called IBM and the support guy said that they had just figured this out too. In my Internet Explorer internet options-connections I somehow had the proxy server box checked, although I don't use a proxy server. Nothing was filled in for a proxy server name; only the box was checked. And it didn't affect my browsing so I never noticed it, but when I unchecked the box the ThinkVantage worked fine.

Thanks for the responses to my problem.

I just tried System Update last night to install a couple of updates. It downloaded the updates fine, but it failed on the install.

While installing both updates, it launched my Epson scanner software. :?

I did not have my scanner connected at the time, and when I clicked on the Cancel button for the scanner software, it cancelled the installation as well. I tried it several times, even waiting one time for awhile, before closing the scanner software. I gave up and used Software Installer - and that worked.
