Recommended Ethernet/wireless router for home use

#1 Post by alexzabr » Tue Jun 06, 2006 3:50 pm

I'm new to notebooks world, you may have noticed my full of excitement message in T4x board acquiring brand new T43 recently (arrived just a few days ago).
Now, I'd like to set up a small network at home to interconnect my desktop with the laptop. The desktop has regular Ethernet on-board
(apparently what is called 10/100), the laptop has it also of course.
I intent to purchase a router that would allow connecting between teh computers in a network (workgroup) and also allowing wireless (WiFi) connectivity to my laptop within my home.
I've heard not all routers are good in terms of wireless connection stability, some are getting more recommended then others.
So what would you recommend ? Which brand ? Type ?
My home internet connection is through ADSL (currently use ADSL USB modem), dunno whether it matters for a router issue (guess I'll need ADSL-capable model).

Thanks in advance, Alex
14.1" T43 2668-6ZU machine.
ATI x300, 1GB RAM, 40 GB HDD, all the connectivity (except of Bluetooth), DVD/CD-WR Combo...
Still excited about this great machine...

I'd recommend any Netgear, Netopia brand, or Apple Airport they are pretty solid. Of course Cisco as well.

I'd avoid Linksys (unless you use a WRTG54GL or similar which lets you use unofficial linux firmware)... their hardware isn't to bad, but their firmware is by far the worst their is.
T43 (2687-DUU) - 1.86GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 100GB 5400 (non IBM-firmware Hitachi 5k100) HD, Fingerprint Scanner, 802.11abg/Bluetooth, ATI x300

Linksys WRT54G. It has great firmware "in the box" as it comes from Linksys, plus a choice of third party frimware available from several sources as well!

Cheers,

Bill

I have two of these, one version 5 and one an older version. They both work fine. I didn't pay any attention to the version when I bought the second one since I didn't have any intention of changing the firmware.

Never get one made by CompUSA.

It disconnects & reconnects constantly--> you will never be able to play any games online

although you are able to surf on webs
