Check the Power Booster 2K utility out. You can tweak the spin-down and rotational states of your IBM/Hitachi HDD(s) with that tool *without* having to use the more serious version that requires its own boot environ and requires a reboot for changes to go into effect. Tested on my T43 and it runs just fine and successfully manages both HDDs, the primary and the one in the Ultrabay, without any fuss or problems. I had to put my ear to both in a really quiet room, but it toned down the rate of activity as well as the speed; reducing any possible noise and increasing battery life at the expensive of performance.
As a bonus, you also get a nifty little command-line interface with control states reminiscent of the TP FCU along with an un-obtrusive GUI that lets you throttle the drive managemant dynamically to suit your needs without any other changes being required. It can be minimized/iconified to the tray as well as being activated on startup. Simple and easy to use, appear to use no more than ~0.5MB of memory on average with a peak of 3.5MB right after the initial install and runtime initialization.
