I can see little pixelation/blocks on my screen at an angle

#1 Post by utgrad » Sat Jun 17, 2006 12:30 pm

Hi,

I just purchased an X60s and if I look at the screen straight on it looks fine, but when I move my head/or the screen at 5 degrees and higher I start to see these little blocks stacked up next to each other that are different colors...it's hard to explain-doesnt show up in a pic...anyone have a similar problem or know what this is? Should I send it back?

Thanks

Put your screen on 32bit colors rather than the default 16bit.

Glad I helped ;)
Of course 32bit will eat more battery... choices always choices

I believe the battery healthy solution to this would be to...

Not look at your screen from an angle.

When you say pixelation, do you mean you can see colour dithering or banding?

Or is this an oddball problem specific to this particular screen on 16Bit mode.

No, I did see this even with old my CRTS I've owned.
It is not pixelation. When you look at the greys areas of explorer for instance you will notice brighter/darker areas. Those are only visible with 16bit screen settings.

I even saw those when running win98 and this kind of old stuff so IMO it is an old "problem". That said you have to look carefully. It is not that much annoying.

Yeah, it's as thibouille says...it's not that annoying, but it just makes the screen look like something is wrong with it...I've never noticed anything like this on my work laptop (Dell).

As far as the recommendation to not view it at an angle: like I said, 5 degrees off looking straight on and you can see it-kind of hard to keep your head looking straight at the screen when this small of a departure from looking center causes the problem to be visible-so that's not really an option.

I was just wondering if this is an indicator of future problems with the LCD, as I've never noticed this on other laptops I've used.

I'll just leave it on 32bit unless I will need the extra battery life

Right... so this isn't realy a problem.
It's the windows renderer dithering the colours to make up colours non existant in the 16bit colour pallete.

Well it's a [censored] site better than best guess rendering where it just takes the colour nearest to the one in the source :p
