I've got here a PCMCIA card from IBM (presumably for use in Thinkpads). It is called an IBM IDE PC Card, and its P/N is 00K1084; its FRU # is 00K1123. The serial number is H7X06920 if that helps. It has on one end the standard PCMCIA interface (dur) and on the other it has two identical connectors obviously for the dongle, about the size of the "regular" dongle connectors on a modem/ethernet card (in fact the dongles off of my Xircom modem/ethernet card plug in to them), and between these two connectors is a small connector for a two-pronged plug, about the size of two matchsticks side-by-side. Photos if you think they'll help.

I would like to have photos if I could, this sounds like the kind of PCMCIA card I have for my Deskstar HDD. In fact, it sounds exactly like what I have. I got it with my IBM 701c Thinkpad.

Not only that, but I seem to have two of them. One for the PD drive I got with my 701c and one for the Deskstar HDD with it. They worked pretty darn well at that too.

Yup; that looks like the IBM PCMCIA IDE cards I have.

I also have one made by Panasonic for their PD drives.

00K1123 is an interface card that was supplied with some IBM external CD Drives. See this link:

Exactly; but don't forget the PD drives too.

Some of those external CD drives that read PD also took CDs in the old caddies.

And shopping.com appears to be Wrong. It's not a "network adapter."

When in doubt, I go with IBM parts info. YMMV

So where do I get the Dongle? The disk drive? What kind they?
I have a panasonic CDROM that looks like a portable CD player, works like one, and can also work as a CDROM. It has a PCMCIA SCSI interface card.

Mine came with the Panasonic CDROM when I got my 701c. It was in the box if I recall correctly. I don't even know if IBM sells them seperately anymore because, the one on my IBM Travelstar HDD enclosure is fixed to the PCMCIA portion.

I have one of the Portable Drive Bay 2000s and it's IDE interface card is marked almost exactly the same way. I'll bet the the guts inside are pretty much the same, but the cord is permanently attached on my card instead an interface to a dongle.

I've had one of the external Pansonic CD-ROMs as well and that's about what it looks like. I also have one of the IBM external drives from the 701/560 era that takes an interface and I'm betting that, that is what it goes to. Unfortunately I have the drive, but no cord or card so can't check for you. There's a guy on ebay that sells old stock IBM stuff that will occassionally have these things if yo want to look. If you are interested, I'd be happy to donate my external drive to you.

Same thing here for one of the Travelstars; it is detachable with the Panasonic PD/CD-ROM however.

I used to have one of those CD Rom drives.. worked via AC adapter or rechargable batteries... Had Audio CD player controls built to it along with headphone jack...

I might still have it, card, cables, rechargeable batt, and a/c power cord... burried in the boxes I haven't unpacked from moving...

Another "blast from the past" have is an IBM 260MEG PCMCIA hard drive.. IBM P/N 41H6947, FRU 06H8956

Mind didn't do PD... mine was just the 4x portable CD... Type 1969-008 FRU 75H7515 P/N07H0632 (on the bottom of the drive...)

Speaking of blast from the past, somewhere around here, I've got one of these things in a 40Mb version that came in a VERY neat little padded nylon case. I used to use it with my 701C. It was fun just to watch people's reaction to it!

I have a 20meg "hard card" too... I can't find it at the moment...

it was the thinkness of 1 card slot on the side...

where as the 260meg takes up both slots...

The 20meg was like "flash" memory... the 260 meg is litterally a hard drive, with spinning platters
