Graphic Card Compatibilities w/ Dock

#1 Post by Sable_X31 » Tue Jun 20, 2006 12:02 pm

Hi, everyone. I just got my first ever personal Thinkpad, a used X31. I've ordered a full dock (one of the rarer ones with the firewire port), and have been thinking about adding a graphics card so I can play newer games in the evening.
My question is, has anyone had any difficulties with compatibility when using a Thinkpad that has a built-in ATI solution with a PCI card that is NVIDIA-based? I was thinking specifically of getting a BFG 3DFuzion GeForce 6200oc w/256MB (http://www.bfgtech.com/6200_256_PCI.html). This seems to be the most powerful PCI card available, or likely ever to be made, but I'm wary of the combination, as I've heard from a couple of desktop owners that it wouldn't work with their ATI-based motherboards.
I'm also a little concerned with the stated system requirement of a 250 watt power supply. I have no idea how much power a dock supplies, but I suspect not a lot. Then again, I'm sure it doesn't have nearly the draw of a desktop, either, especially when powering down the lcd/tft like you'd do for this sort of thing. I also have a suspicion that this requirement was copy-and-pasted from the AGP specs, and that PCI is similarly low-powered on all systems, regardless of power supply.
Anybody have any experience with this card or combination?

Suggestion: wait until you get your Dock to ensure it'll work with your X31. ;) (See other thread "Dock vs. Dock II")
2668-75U T43, 2GB RAM, 2nd hand NMB kybd, Dock II, spare Mini-Dock, and spare Port Replicators. Wacom BT tablet. Ultrabay 2nd HDD.
2672-KBU X32, 1.5GB RAM, 7200 rpm TravelStar HDD.

As we were discussing in another thread, I got the Dock in and it works, though not completely. The local Fry's has opened boxes of both the 128 MB and 256 MB version of this card; I'm contemplating buying one, trying it out, then returning it (Fry's wants $100 for the opened 128 MB box, while Newegg only wants $30, but sadly doesn't stock the 256 MB version yet). I guess since nobody else has any info I'll try it out and report back.

For anybody who was curious about the results, I've posted a full review in the X Series Section.
