FWIW my wife's T42 suffered a complete and total battery failure that resulted in her system being inoperable until the battery was removed.
There was no "warning" evidenced by decreased battery life, one day the unit was operating normally on battery and AC, next the unit wouldn't start docked or undocked with the battery installed.
I even tested the battery in my hangar queen T40 which showed the same symptoms as her T42 in that it was completely unresponsive with the battery installed.
