this has never happened before today-

my ultrabay battery reached 2%, and then a black triangle with an exclamation in it appeared directly to the right of the green gauge- stating "Your battery can store XX% of its original full charge capacity. Double click to learn about increasing battery lifespan." - which takes you to lenovos website to buy another battery.

i thought it was just going to bother me about that for the old ultrabay, which is about 60% below its original capacity- but now its giving me the same notice for the main battery which has 85% of original capacity.

why did this suddenly appear, and can i make it go away?

Comes up from time to time. If Power Manager will support it on your system, condition the battery from the Battery Information tab.

Or if you use Battery Maximizer, just run the battery down to about 3% then charge all the way up without shut down. One of the IBM pages recommends doing this every few months.

i had a feeling if i got an answer to this it would be from you! conditioning isnt available on the r40 with power manager, but i have followed the recommended care. regardless of the compatibility, i love having the time remaining on the taskbar.

Just want to make sure - condition the battery means "perform reset", right?

Yes, in a way. "Perform reset" seems to reset the battery gauge for the battery, but part of the cycle is draining fully, then charging fully, the battery. Don't do it a lot, as it will take a small toll on the battery lifetime.
