Sticker on lid of laptop left a semi-circular "mark&quo

#1 Post by utgrad » Fri Jun 30, 2006 6:35 am

I took the semi-circular sticker that came on my Thinkpad off and now there is a slight discoloration where the sticker is...it's just a lighter shad of flat black, but I just wanted to see if there is any way to remove this? It didnt take off any paint, just left some residue behind (I guess)...is there a finish-safe way to fix this? Thanks

If it's truly a glue residue, lighter fluid will work wonders to disolve the gummy stuff and in most cases will cause no harm to paint or plastics if only used sparingly. My trick is to lightly moisten a small part of a paper towel, and use that to rub off the glue.

Denatured alcohol works well.

Enough natural alcohol and you won't hardly notice it anymore! :P

I may take the liberty, by the by, to note that this is more of a Cure-every-problem-you-have type of solution. :)

Naphtha (lighter fluid) is the first thing that occurs to me also. I've often used it to remove sticker residue from guitars without damaging the lacquer. However, it will sometimes leave a slight haze on a high gloss finish (requiring a quick once-over with polishing compound), and I have no experience with how it behaves on the materials used in Thinkpads. Might be a good idea to test it on an area that is normally hidden from view.

Wont lighter fluid and alcohol damge/discolor the rubbery surface of a TP lid?

How long has the sticker been on your ThinkPad? Maybe it is just a natural aging process due to UV rays in sunlight.
