Software Conflict: Access Connections 4.xx vs. Photoshop

I have been experiencing this issue with every version of AC 4.xx. Every time I install AC newer than 3.81, I have a problem with Photoshop and it won't open all the way up. PS (5.0 LE) starts to open but the splash screen never appears and you can’t use the program at all.

I think I've tried every version beyond 3.81 but this conflict won't go away and prevents me from using Photoshop. It's a disappointment since the newer versions of AC connect more quickly and overall performance seems to be better than the old 3.81. I don't seem to have any other problems/issues except for Photoshop not running.

I've tried just about every combination of install/uninstall that I could think of. I've un-installed PS and attempted to re-install but the installation disc can't be read whenever a newer version of AC is on my machine. I end up doing a system restore or un-install AC 4.xx and re-install 3.81 and everything is back to “normal”.

Furball4l PM-ed and suggested a couple more things. I can open/un-install/re-install PS in Safe Mode. The program seems to operate normally. However, when I go back to a normal re-boot, the same conflict appears and I am unable to open PS. He also suggested a Ctrl –Alt – Shift and that brings up a small dialogue box similar to this screenshot taken from the “Preferences” menu in PS:

I have the following choices:

Primary: “Startup” or “C:\”

Secondary: : “Startup” or “None”

(I guess Scratch Disk is Adobe’s terminology for Virtual memory or paging file:

By default, Photoshop uses the hard drive that the operating system is installed on as its primary scratch disk. You can change the primary scratch disk or designate a secondary scratch disk, to be used when the primary disk is full. Your primary scratch disk should be your fastest hard disk, and should have plenty of defragmented space available.

The following guidelines can help you assign scratch disks:

• For best performance, scratch disks should be on a different disk than any large files you are editing.
• Scratch disks should be on a different disk than the one used for the Macintosh or Windows virtual memory.
• Scratch disks should be local. That is, they should not be accessed over a network.
• Scratch disks should be conventional (non-removable) media.
• Raid disks/disk arrays are good choices for dedicated scratch disk volumes.
• Scratch disks should be defragmented regularly.

To change the scratch disk assignment:

1 Choose File > Preferences > Plug-Ins & Scratch Disks.
2 Select the desired disk from the menu. Then restart Adobe Photoshop for the change to take effect.

Important: Adobe recommends that you use a disk tool utility, such as Norton Utilities or Defrag, to optimize and defragment your hard drive on a regular basis. See your Macintosh or Windows documentation for information.)

Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’d really like to be able to use AC 4.xx and have a tremendous amount of time invested trying to correct this.

Thanks

Hmm, that's not what I get when I do the key combo. I get this:

I tried to delete the preferences manually too when I had your issue, and was sure that I had done so, but it had no effect. Only deleting them via this dialogue fixed things. I forget, is this PS 7 that you're running? That's what I'm on ... 7.0.1 actually I think.

Thanks for your reply. I did some further reading today at the Adobe forum and attempted a few more things which don't work with PS 5LE or had no impact. I was able to locate the "preferences" file and deleted that and it had no impact.

I did not get the dialogue box you're showing. I got one very similar to the screenshot I posted above pertaining to the "scratch disk".

Ah. It's probably the 5LE vs. 7 difference. Well, 7 is very nice if you can finagle a copy of it somehow.

Just an idea. Does Access Connections use any files with the same file name as Photoshop? For the reason I ask this, look for libeay32.dll in the following document. Perhaps something similar to what is happening below is happening with Access Connections and Photoshop.

Intel wireless adapters have limited connection methods and cannot be controlled via Fn + F5 - ThinkPad

OK, I am willing to try anything at this point. :P I searched on the file you mention above, GomJabbar, and I have no instances of it on my machine.

Are you suggesting that I need to go thru and cross-reference every file in AC and my version of Photoshop??

Thanks.

Sounds like fun to ME. I also want to know what you're supposed to do if they do share a file. I doubt you can make them look at different copies of it...

Well.....................more or less.

There are some programs like XTree (old DOS stuff but probably still around in some form or another) that allow one to compare files in 2 different directories somewhat easily.

Like I said, it's just an idea.

I am not sure. That is really beyond my knowledge. I could speculate, but I probably shouldn't.

Here is another idea. Look in Event Viewer for clues. Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

Also look in Device Manager for problems. Check View > Show hidden devices.

OK, I've cross-referenced and it didn't take long - - PS has only about 20 files or so. I found no duplicate file names.

What do I do with Event Viewer? Not sure how it works.

Thx.

Just open it, and click on Application - also System. Look for red X's in particular. Look for errors that occurred at the time when you were opening Photoshop or Access Connections (you may have other errors, at other times, as well). Read any error message displayed, and see if you can make any sense out of it. While you are on-line, you can click on the link in the error message, and possibly get more information from Microsoft.

I've waited a while to see if any errors would pop up in Event Viewer and I could not see any issues pertaining to either program

Hmm, every time I try to install The GIMP (freeware Photoshop-like program) it asks me whether I want to rename C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\zlib1.dll. So far I've chickened out and not installed it. Sounds like a related problem; I wonder if there is any way around it?

Don't rename the file; GIMP will run fine with that dll as is. :)

I installed AC 4.21 this morning. WOW, Photoshop and AC can now happily co-exist....no more conflicts !! :)
