600X vs T2x

I've seen a couple of indications that some people think that a 600X is better than a T2x with equivalent specs.

I do understand that the 600 series were the first popular Thinkpads, and the best of the early Thinkpads. Many members owned 600s as their first Thinkpads, and have other reasons to think fondly of them.

However, strictly objectively speaking, how could a T2x in equivalent condition, with equivalent specs (memory, HD, cpu speed) not be preferable to a 600X ?

From the feature table, the T2x added Titanium reinforcing, Thinklight (which I use frequently and miss in my 570), and IIRC has longer battery life running at the same cpu speed as the 600X. And it looks to me that T2x accessories are cheaper and easier to find (although I have not done a specific check on this factor or on the battery life).

Am I missing anything ?

I didinot work on a 600 but I haved worked with T20,21,22 and 23. T20 sometimes might act up. Same to T21 with less frequency. T22 and T23 are pretty stable. So I think people can not just compare a T2x to a 600. Also, I heard 600X is better than 600.

The key words are "equivalent specs".

A 600X will max out at 576MB RAM vs. 512MB on a T2X because of the 64MB on the 600X planar. A max RAM 650MHz 600X will outperform a 650MHz, 700MHz or 750MHz T2X with max RAM.

A 600X is actually slightly lighter than a T2X, but much more robust.

The T2X 14.1" display is larger than the 13.3" display on the 600X. Nor did the 600X ever have a display with SXGA+ resolution or the Thinklight.

A T2X will run slightly longer on battery.

I have wordsmithing friends who have been buying 600X machines from me for years regardless of what newer-better-faster-lighter machine their employer provides them.

They simply want that 600 series keyboard.

While these are all now cases of the 600X serving as a secondary system, at the time the early T series machines were being introduced the 600X was their "go to" machine and supplanted the T machine entirely.

I still get cutomers for one or two 650MHz, 576MB RAM, 7K60 or 7K100 HD equipped machines a month.

I've wanted to start a topic like yours.....but anyway, I'm also looking for a 600X. It seems this model is just so demanding....!! I fell in love with the 600X when I first saw it in my friends house. Will get one...for secondary usage.

I finally found a 600X for a reasonable price on ebay - it was one without a HD or RAM and I just moved the RAM and HD from my 570. I lucked out and it is an exceptionally clean one - it looks like it was barelly used, and then replaced by a T2x series and left in a closet. FYI - Thinkpads that are missing stuff sell for much less on ebay than "complete and ready to use" ones.

I've been skeptical all these months about some of the claims, but:

- The keyboard is indeed really nice, definitely better than the T22 or T40 keyboard. Somehow the engineer got the travel, spring strength, etc. just right. I'm wondering how all that information was lost when the T2x series was made. By the way, although some indicated that they thought that the 570 keyboard was the same as the 600 keyboard, I do not think that is true - I have two 570s and the keyboards are not as good.

- It does seem to be a more robust construction than the T2x. Did the IBM 600 engineers leave the company ?

- I miss the Thinklight Has anyone ever added one to a 600 ?

Congratulations on the purchase! I have used two 600E's and one 600 and those were the three most robust Thinkpads I have ever used (I have owned 21). However, I still prefer the T2* because they offer higher screen resolutions and the 600/E/X have the speakers on the palm rests, which scratch my wrists.

I totally agree with you on that point as far as the T2x concerned (don't have a T40 yet). I haven't used my 600Xs that much recently but I have obtained a couple of 600Es and the keyboards are much sturdier than the T2x. I think it's mostly because they are screwed into the bezel and they don't have to flex in order to remove them from the system (like the T2x keyboards).

There was a thread around here somewhere about someone who installed an LED into the LCD bezel and created their own version of the Thinklight.
