Latest version of Rescue and Recovery and CSS 7

Hello Thinkpad forums.
Having just started up System Update, I am asked to download the latest Rescue and Recovery and the new Client Security Solution.
They are big downloads, the new R&R being an enormous 1,4GB. Should I get these? I recall some thinkpad users having problems with these.
Any info or advise would be greatly apreciated :

I personally recommend staying with CSS 6 until Lenovo gets their head on straight and fixes 7. Its currently a royal mess, the system is slower, it doesnt work as well, and it does way to much "verification of the security chip".
Also, since I think they want you to have CSS7 installed to use the new R&R, I would recommend not installing that either.

I'll wait until a later release then, thanks

To further explain, I have CSS 7, and dont think there is an easy way to get rid of it, but I much preferred version 6 to what I am running now. I just hope they will forget more updates of 7, and rewrite it and release 8 soon. Its sad, because although most Lenovo software looks extremely professional, it often seems it isnt tested nearly enough, and turns out to be a nuisance. If they would install this stuff on their own computers they might see how annoying it is.

Hmm, interesting, is anyone else having my problem? Ill mess with some of my settings.
Both chip check and user authentication are OK for me

Both take a second or two.
My problem is getting a response when I swipe a finger - sometimes it just sits there forever. Sometimes it reacts after about 5 seconds.

make sure to read the Considerations posted on Lenovo's site. Most problem occured because CSS 7 was installed first before RR 3.1. Also when installing the new RR 3.1 previous RR should be uninstalled first. I am using the CSS 7 and RR 3.1 yet experience no slow down in the system. Just a different workflow but still manageable.

I haven't even installed RnR. I only have CSS 7.
I haven't experienced any delays comparable to the ones mentioned at 45 seconds and alike.
But I am not using CSS windows authorization. I only use fingerprint at boot and for password manager.
xcoll2001 - please confirm CSS performance you are getting

Are you getting correct recognition of finger swipe most times with almost no delay (say less than one second) or frequent requirement to re-swipe?
I thought I had followed the Lenovo instructions carefully, but may have got it wrong. My reading of their "considerations" is that they recommend that neither CSS nor RR is installed prior to installation of either package - which if you think about it makes it impossible to install either. However, they go on to say - if either is already installed, simply follow the prompts. Not really helpful if there is a real dependence there. The sequence table in their technology deployment guide seems more precise but doesn't entirely agree with tables contained in other documents on their site.
I'm interested to hear what others are experiencing - I'm prepared to uninstall the lot and start again in any sequence that will improve things.

Yes I am. No problem there.
Maybe try to rescan all your fingers. The scans might have gone bad...

Finally re-installed both RnR 3.1 and CSS7

Seeing others are not reporting the intermittent authentication failures that I am experiencing, I have uninstalled both RnR and CSS and re-installed from scratch. Following the Lenovo recommended sequence (RnR first and CSS second) clicking on "security setup" on the RnR front panel enrols the user as owner of the PC. After CSS installation, the CSS security setup wizard then asks if the user wishes to use the keys established by RnR as the basis for the CSS configuration.
There is very little specific guidance in all the documentation, but I am starting to suspect my problems are due to some inadvertant departure from the installation path presumed by IBM/Lenovo developers.
The next few days will tell if it has been successful. At least this time, I can say that the whole process went according to the best available information and I saw no indications along the way of strange or unexpected results. I'm hopeful, but then I've been here before.
I also nearly gave myself a heart attack when I removed the BIOS supervisor password before trying to remove the power up password prior to all the instals. The BIOS disabled the SVP but then demanded I enter it for the removal of the POP. In the end I had to remove the keyboard and the CMOS backup battery to get rid of the POP and allow a reboot. Scary!

I have set up about 10 or 12 T42's for my clients all using CSS7, and its really hit or miss on the security chip validation, for some it takes forever, and on others it goes pretty quick.

Something I mentioned elsewhere, wrt CSS7 security chip validation, is that several times recently on power up I have been told, via a screen message, that the security chip has been de-activated.
I have powered down, without going further, powered up and all has been OK. Strange!!!
(I did check the first time, in BIOS, and that said that the chip was still enabled.)

Back again:
Just went to check for updates on Lenovo site. New one for R&R:
I quote:
Rescue and Recovery Critical Patch for Windows Update (KB917422)
'This package is the Rescue and Recovery Critical Patch program to fix the "Application Error: R2R.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." error that occurs after applying Windows Update (KB917422).
The cause of this error message is an incompatibility between Microsoft Windows Update KB917422 and Rescue and Recovery 3.10.0017 or 3.10.0022.'
Don't know whether it affects anything above, but it may be of interest to others here.

It could fix some of these issues. Most of Lenovos updates fix alot more than they would care to admit.

Actually, I just installed the new R&R last weekend after applying the Windows patches last week. I ran 2 Base backups after installing, and both generated that exact error early in the backup process but the backup completed normally and said it was successfull...?
I went into the image files and looked to see what was there to try to determine if the backups really were good - it looked like everything was there and ok.
Still - don't you just love backup software that might be working right even though it says it's not? If anything happens and I need to recover I'm pretty sure that I might or might not have a good backup to go to, unless I don't.
I have True Image and use it, along with MS Backup. Not sure why I keep R&R around other than the fact I can get to it's backups through the R&R workspace, which is pretty cool I have to admit. But I have never trusted it, and probably never will. Anyone relying on it alone to save their butt is crazy.

I tried 3 times last night to install that fix using System Update, each time it failed.
Anyone else having problems?
