Stupid question: carry laptop without shutting it down?

#1 Post by Wolfie » Wed Aug 30, 2006 12:16 pm

I will be using my laptop throughout the day and my classes are an hour each. I am wondering whether it's recommended to shut down the laptop each time I finish up a class. Is it safe to lug the notebook around in say suspend mode?

Probably best to get it to hibernate. Some laptops in suspend mode can overheat in a bag.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

As long as you don't put it in a bag. The heat build up might cause the system to overheat.

Be sure to either shut it down, suspend, or hibernate - otherwise you may lose the hard drive !

I carry my ThinkPad all around campus from class to class. When leaving a class, I usually just close the lid and let it go into standby mode. When I get to my next class, I just open it up and let it resume.

If I'm going between school and work, I always put it in hibernate.

I've been doing this for ~2 years now and have never had a problem.

FYI, I use a sleeve from sfbags.com (with the strap).

You can put it in the bag with suspend. if the system does overheat it will shut down, also the heat would have to be stupidley high for your harddrive to die. Your bag will catch on fire first.

Personally I would hibernate. But suspending if thats what you want to do will not cause any damage.

I've never noticed any excessive heat (hell, any heat at all) coming from my computer while it is in standby.

The only time it "overheated" in my bag was when I thought it had gone into standby when it really didn't.
