Rescue and Recovery woes

As the subject says, I'm having issues with Rescue and recovery.

Here's the background: I installed RnR 3.10 back in june/july and made a new set of rescue media.

Last week I decided I wanted to play around with linux so I made a complete backup of my system to a network share on my desktop computer. I installed a few linux distros, tried vista and had decided to go back to my previous backup.

I threw in the rescue media and selected to recover from a backup, selected the network share and it said "Cannot execute recovery since backup was made with a previous version on Rescue and Recovery".

I thought maybe I had installed an update since making the recovery disks so I did a full recovery and re-installed the latest version from Lenovo. but I still get the same error message.

Anyone know how I can recover this backup or have an earlier version of 3.10 I can try?

Thanks

Try installing Rescue and Recovery from C:\IBMTOOLS\APPS\IBMRNR.

EDIT: This will install the version of R&R that came with your ThinkPad. It is a little difficult to know exactly which version your backup was made with.

It seems the plot thickens, seems like i can restore single files from within windows using version 3.10.0022 but I can't restore the whole drive since most of the files are currently in use, etc. Restoring the whole drive requires a reboot into the rescue portion of the drive but using version 3.10.0022 of the rescue partition it gives me the same error as with 3.10.0017(The version from my rescue media, but it's reported as 3.10.1077 for some reason).

IMHO it's ridiculous that minor subversion changes cause incompatibilities like this. Lenovo should keep the previous versions available for download otherwise you have to be religous about keeping your RnR up to date and burn a new rescue media with each update.

That is true.

The following solution would have worked if you had known about it.
Lenovo wrote:* If you want to retain the ability to restore from backups created with a previous version of Rescue and Recovery, you must create a copy of your backup files on bootable, external recovery media before installing the latest version.
* To archive your backups, complete the following procedure:
1. From the Rescue and Recovery main screen, click Backup, then select Copy backups from hard drive from the drop-down list.
2. Select the medium you want to save your backup files to by clicking the appropriate radio button. The backup files that will be copied are listed on the user interface.
3. Click OK to continue.
* You will need blank removable media when copying backups from the hard drive to CD or DVD. Make sure that you label each disc as it is created, and that you store them together in a safe place.
Note: You will be prompted to make the external media bootable at the beginning of the process.
Rescue and Recovery v3.1 by Lenovo

Your best bet is to try and find someone who has the version of Rescue and Recovery that you made your backup with, and have them burn a Rescue Media CD for you and drop it in the mail. I decided to stick with the version that came with my ThinkPad, which is version 1, so I won't be able to help you with this myself.

Non-writable media error

I am able to boot from a rescue and recovery disk into the RnR program, but when I attempt to change password I get this error and told the option is not active.

I'm not sure this is a problem, but when I press the blue button on booting it launches RnR then asks for a password I don't recall ever setting and don't know.

Can someone advise if this is going to be a problem I need to address, or can I forget about it since it seems I can get into RnR by booting from CD.

Thanks.

I am not sure, but I believe when you set a password for your Rescue and Recovery backups, that password is the same one that is preventing you from using the blue button to get into RnR. You should try to figure out what it could be. I am not sure if you can restore a RnR backup or restore factory contents without knowing the password - even though you can boot up from the CD. The only way to know for sure is to try - unless others have gone through the same experience and report it here. I have never set a password in mine.

You could try your windows password.

You can see what Ground Loop wrote regarding passwords in the following thread.

RnR password

I don't believe I ever set this password, but in the heady first days with the new computer it's possible that I did. In any case none of the passwords that I have written down are accepted.

Resolution(I hope)

I replaced hard drive for other reasons. Booted into RnR from CD and restored backup on external drive to new HDD. Afterwards, able to boot into RnR from blue button.

I'm glad you at least found a solution. With the price of laptop hard drives these days, it's really no big deal to buy a new drive comparable to the original. :)

I think it's great

Hello Ken,

This is regarding your post on "Rescue and Recover 3"
I had faced a similar problem, had to pay $30 to Lenovo to get the solution. It is a flaw in their program. Such cheats!! ..You were right when saying that you had never set a password.

Anyways, I m sure your problem is solved, but in future, if you or any other member ever needs to logon to the "Rescue and Recovery Workspace" & it asks you for a password. Exit it, Start windows, Go to Run,
type 'cmd'
In the command prompt type
pe_setupmasterpwde.exe -setmode 0
Press enter.
The rescue and recovery space will never ask you for a password. You infact cannot have a password, such is the flaw in the program. I had to pay $30/- for this [censored]!!!

Let me know on aviaance@yahoo.com, if it helped.
