Does installing the Thinkpad Configuration Utility replace the Windows Control Panel and/or Device Manager?

No. TP Utility merely puts a face around those utilities. Click on one and see - it pulls up Control Panel or Device Manager. ... JD Hurst

No. It consolidates control over your Thinkpad's peripherals in one application and provides easy access to information about the operating system and the laptop itself. For example, you can easily turn off or on the serial port, the infrared port, or the parallel port. You can check on which BIOS version is installed and see the system's serial number and system board serial number without having to re-boot and access the BIOS.

My Thinkpad was originally owned by a large company who must have had either IBM or their own computer techs set up the company's laptops. There are some things that I see people talk about here that are not on the laptop I have, so the difference in the IBM factory configuration and the way the laptop I have is configured is causing a little confusion.
I think I will install the Configuration Utility, it sounds like a good thing to have. Thanks for the info.
