question about postwarranties

#1 Post by dorin » Sun Sep 24, 2006 2:28 am

hi to everyone,

so, i want to buy a t40 (41,42), as a back-up and download computer, but mostly all of them i've seen here or on ebay for sale don't have anymore warranty.

i saw on lenovo's site that i can get a post warranty for about ~100usd for one year. they say they have fo 3 years as well but couldnt find any info about that.

so, how does this work? when has to be purchased this post-wty? can it be anytime, or while the laptop is still under its original warranty?

thanks for any sugestions,

dorin

From my understanding it is when the warranty has run out.

Look into it first. My understanding is once the original warranty has run out you can not get a post warranty through IBM/Lenovo.

BUT certain dealers on Ebay do offer a warranty through other 3rd party companies, like Squaretrade.

1 T23 1.13 Mhz..256 RAM...
1 600e that now a 600x(500Mhz) with 256 RAM
1 600x(500 Mhz) with 327 Ram
1 600x upgraded to 600Mhz with 256 RAM

The following is based on what I remember I read around the beginning of the year. My memory may be faulty, or the terms may have changed.

If I understand this correctly, a ThinkPad that was originally purchased while ThinkPads were still IBM's - that is before May, 2005 (if I remember correctly) can get post warranty service through IBM after the original warranty has expired. A ThinkPad that was purchased after Lenovo took over, would have to get post warranty service elsewhere (possibly through Lenovo).

See following site for more info and contact information.
IBM: Warranty and maintenance options
Lenovo: Warranty upgrades and maintenance service

so then why a lot of people, including here, dont take a post warranty of ~100usd to fix the dead mobo, which is the most frequent flaw (for old machines)?!?!?!?!?

lenovo seems fine but funny part is ibm
Please note: These post-warranty service upgrades apply only if machines are normally used for business, professional, or trade, rather than personal, family, or household purposes.
did anybody purchase a post-warranty? do they make an inspection before?

thanks,

dorin

Perhaps this is probably because it is really business users who need the extra assurance of a post-warranty.

I think having a 4-year warranty available on all machines, is pretty good anyway.

i purchased a warranty on an r40 that was 3 months out of its original 3 year warranty. there was no inspection, i believe that would apply to an older machine, or maybe a newer/costly machine.
