Ethernet card on Thinkpad I 1300

I have what I consider as a major problem. Its with my laptop which is a IBM Thinkpad I1300 In the back of it I have a ethernet connector and a modem, these appear to be on the same card, the modem works fine on the couple of times I have needed to use it. Most of the time I use the built in wireless to connect. Yesterday my router died and I tried to hook up the ethernet directly to my cable modem and I get NOTHING , no lights, no new hardware found nothing, I went to the device manager and the ethernet is not listed on it. I tried to "find" it and can't. I have looked ALL over IBM's website to try and find the driver or hardware set up and there is nothing there. I have no idea what brand this card is and am scared to death about the possiblity of taking the laptop apart to find out. It is a "option" on the original equipment so I don't know what it might be.

first, the I1300 series is pretty old..
so when you say that you have built in wireless i need to ask REALLY!!? ...

now, here is what i suggest..

get the hardware maintenance manual from the ibm/lenovo web site..
here: http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/home.do

insert your machine model number and follow the prompts to publications and hardware maintenance manual..

there you will find whats inside the box..

mose likely it IS one card for both telephone modema and ethernet..

while that machine is out of warranty thse cards are cheap (read nearly free) and available on ebay (in all probability)..
but be sure to get the right one with the right FRU number..

also, it might be that your I series did not have the ethernet port active as in it did not COME with an ethernet port..

yes it really has wireless! Device manager shows
IMB high rate Wireless MiniPCI card

One more question, you said.
"did not have the ethernet port active as in it did not COME with an ethernet port.."

how would I activate it? under the ports it only shows the printer port LPT1.
I recevied this laptop from a friend and I installed a new HD and installed XP Pro,could it be that when I installed this somehow the ethernet port was lost since I know for a fact that at one time it worked.

Thanks for your help

For the ethernet port? Is it entirely inactive, no matter what active network is plugged in, or did Windows XP power it off to save power? That is a feature that can actually eliminate the viewing of network connections in the Network Connections window. Have you tried plugging in an active ethernet cable when the system is off, and then booting with it? :)
