Rapid Restore keeps re-making base images

#1 Post by Terrahawk » Mon Oct 09, 2006 10:53 pm

I'm giving IBM's Rapid Restore a try with my R40. It's still the same version as what originally shipped with the machine.

As far as I'm aware, it should make a base image once and from then on, make incremental backups consisting of the differences between the base and the time the backup was made. This is not happening with my system - Rapid Restore is now up to making its *third* base image. According to the help file, the base image can't be changed once made. My experience is opposite.

The only thing is that I did a System Restore last night to try and fix up an OpenGL problem. Could that have confused Rapid Restore?

i have an R40 also and used rescue and recovery. i did not use the rapid restore that came with my system. instead i downloaded rescue and recovery 3.10.

with the r&r 3.10 there's an option to delete the backup base and incremental images.

Is there an option to force the base image to never be updated? Mine keeps overwriting itself for some strange reason.

i read somewhere in the documentation or help (could not positively recall where) - that the base back-up is done only once and the succeeding back-ups are incremental.
there is no option to choose which backup should be base or increment.
also, the back-up name is user provided. in my case, at the first backup, i gave BASE as the backup name. then for the succeeding 3 backups i used INCREMENT-1, etc. did you provide a name for your back-ups?
i suggest you delete the base backup and other backups, then start again, and give a name say, BASE. then make incremental.

I've since had to reinstall Windows and I'm not using R&R at the moment (waste of space on a 20 GB drive, I had a 40 GB one before but I stopped using it because it was starting to act strange). I don't ever remember there being an option to name your backups. I remember that the backups it creates after it creates your base image are incremental, but I never got an option to name them either.

When it recreated the base image, it just did it and there was nothing I could to do to stop it.
