Rescue & Recovery error since updating (R2R.exe)

#1 Post by Optigrab » Sat Oct 28, 2006 11:31 am

The other day, I applied the latest update to Rescue & Recovery from 3.10.0017 to 3.10.0022. Since then, when I run a backup, Windows almost immediately issues a warning:

"R2R.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

The first couple of times, I cancelled the backup operation, but today I just let it continue, and it completed fine. Nevertheless, the error code bugs me, and I'd like to address it.

Should I uninstall the recent update? How?

Can I uninstall R&R altogether and reinstall?

I have a solution, but I can't comment as to whether it will help with your problem. IBM Support recognized the issue right away; "R2R.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." The fellow directed me to document "migr-65375" on the IBM site:

Rescue and Recovery Critical Patch for Windows Update (KB917422)
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-65375

The description directly addresses my problem:
"This package is the Rescue and Recovery Critical Patch program to fix the Application Error: "R2R.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." error that occurs after applying Windows Update (KB917422)."

I downloaded, applied the patch, problem solved. Now I get no errors when running RnR backup.

One other small point: I highly suspect that my machine already had this patch installed, but that it was somehow damaged or corrupted when I updated from from 3.10.0017 to 3.10.0022. The first reason for this suspicion is that the above problem I experienced also applies to version 3.10.0017, but I experienced no problems with that version. The second reason is that when I ran the patch, I was presented with options to "install new features, repair, or remove" the patch. I chose repair and it worked out fine.

I'm experiencing the same problem on my z60m, and it may have started at about the same time. I get the "R&R has encountered a problem and needs to close" message, but after I attempt to cancel the backup, it appears to proceed normally. However, I still have R&R 3.01.037.00. Does anybody know whether the patch would work on this version?

I would upgrade to RnR V4.0 which does include that fix.

I've been on V4.0 since it was released without any problems.

Thanks! I contacted tech support yesterday and that's exactly what they had me do. Error message is gone. A side benefit is that the fingerprint reader software had to be upgraded at the same time for some reason, and the new version actually seems to work for a change.

:::

A side note, R&R 4 is much faster then lower
version incase other still not upgrade yet.

Also, make sure deleted all old backup & make a new
BASE backup....!

Enjoy....!

I don't notice any speed increase (and it requires more disks), but perhaps that's because I installed two or three new programs recently. Anyway, it works OK. The 5.6 version of the fingerprint software is great - I like the way it allows the sensitivity to be adjusted. I had about given up using the old version due to the poor recognition, but this version usually recognizes my print on the first try.

I usually back up to CDs or DVDs, but I'm sure I did a base backup to the hard drive at one point. Can't see it any more from within RnR though. Would it have been deleted during the uninstall of the old version? Can you tell me where it would be located? I suppose it would be on the hidden partition somewhere, in which case I don't know how to delete it except through RnR.

Thanks!

Yes, The new Finger Print version is great,
you can have more fun to test your finger
at Windows Contral Panal.

The RnR Backup should be at C:\RRbackups
The new RnR can't read the old backup as I remember.
So, make a new base backup.
Also, the new RnR is faster when doing new backup point
after the base.

Thanks! That is indeed rather cool.

No such directory on my Z60m (WinXP Pro, Version 2002, SP2). I did do a complete uninstall of the old RnR - maybe that axed it.
