Problems with NEC 6500 DVD Burner

Hi
I recently bought a NEC 6500a DVD burner from a friend. It works fine as a DVD player and CD burner, but I find that I am unable to burn DVDs. I just shoved it into the ultrabay dock of my TP R40 without any modifications.
Does anyone know if I have to do something to make it work ? The curious thing is that when I startup it shows up on `My Computer' as a DVD + R drive but when I launch something like Nero or try to format it with IBM DLA it converts it to a CD drive. I also tried Deepburner with no luck.
Any ideas or suggestions ?
