I think what you're looking for is the Thinkpad Hotkey driver.

According to

You need

The following utilities are also required to enable the Fn + F7 function:
* ThinkPad Power Management Driver V1.21 or later
* ThinkPad On Screen Display V3.00 or later (Note: This program is included in ThinkPad Hotkey Features package V 1.02.0271 or later).

Fn + F7 does pull up Presentation Director. I am not sure what you would pull up if Presentation Director was not installed. Musti is also correct in what you need - esp. Hotkey features.

There's an option to make Fn+F7 just cycle through display options without the Presentation director.

Ok, thanks for the info. I have always had Presentation Director installed. Never tried it without.

i've used pres director before and there is an option to make FN+F7 cycle through available displays but would rather not have to have an extra program installed just to use that key combo.

i'm sure i've had thinkpads with a clean XP image without pres director installed, at work where FN+F7 worked with no problems.

I only have a T22, but I did not have Pres Director installed and if I tried the Fn+F7 combo it would cycle between LCD display and exterior display. I recently did a driver update through Software Installer and it installed Pres Director for me, but the F7 combo stills operates the same, cycling between LCD and exterior display, and by that I mean it just shuts off my LCD (since i don't have an exterior display hooked up). I at least could operate fine without Pres Director installed. Edited to say that you at least have to have an up-to-date Hotkey driver installed.
