hi,
i'm using symantec client firewall that came with my new T60p.
i have it set at the default level.
i don't really know much about the firewalls, but i have disabled the windows firewall in Computer Management, and set it to manual start only, because i've heard having 2 firewalls cause problems.

my problem now is with AIM - (AOL instant messenger) version 5.9.6089 and with direct connection and file transfers. as far as i can tell i have my symantec firewall settings set to permit everything with this program, but i can't direct connect or file transfer unless i disable the firewall.

actually, another AIM question that's strange on my new system, when i receive an im, i have it set to play the windows xp ding sound, which it does, but sometimes, but not always, it also plays the windows start navigation sound. and when i turn off the sound for starting a navigation it stops, but i like the start navigation sound for when i'm actually starting a navigation. anyone got a fix for that? somewhere in the registry maybe? i already use registry mechanic.

Do yourself a favor and uninstall all that Symantec trialware; this is but the first of what promises to be many aggravating experiences.

Pls: Just get rid of this crappy bloatware and avoid getting in contact to any yellow box you'll met in future. I'm serious! Any it will solve your AIM problems by the way.

really? nobody uses the symantec client firewall that comes with? i thought it was good thing when i saw it came with the system, and symantec antivirus? which i dunno how/why it's different from norton antivirus...

but nobody uses symantec client firewall? just windows firewall? i hope you're not going to make me get another program to install

There is nothing wrong with the Symantec (Corporate) firewall product. If it says "Norton", I would agree, but I have had Symantec Corporate running for years with no problems. It should have disabled the Windows Firewall, as you do not want two firewalls running.

What you need to do is permit the IP range in the firewall. If you are directly connected, it is usually no problem, but you can check in the network settings of the firewall to see if allowing the AOL range helps. Also turn off the Network Detector and use the Default setting. Add any particular IP ranges in there if needed.

I don't add external settings in here, and do use external connections, but it doesn't hurt to check.

There is a possibility that Lenovo is calling Norton products as Symantec, but an earlier poster proved to us that she received the Corporate product on her ThinkPad. So far as I know there is only (1) Symantec Corporate or (2) Norton Consumer.

Hi,

Turn on google and see how many users face problems while using Symantec products. The Symanec Internet Security Suite stuff is crap: it slows down your system by wasting disc space for itself and flooding the windows registry with a bunch of entries. It is (still?) possible to knock out your system thru Norton Firewall. It also promises to control outbound traffic which is simply not true.

With the Windows Firewall you'll get all the basic protection a user needs to be safe enough. Furthermore pls keep your Windows up to date using Windows Update and don't use IE/OE. Turn of unneeded windows services and don't work as an Administrator for your daily business issues.
