"cssauth.exe failed to initialize"?

#1 Post by hodad » Mon Jan 08, 2007 1:01 am

When booting up I periodically get a message that "cssauth.exe failed to initialize". Is this part of McAfee or something? Feedback greatly appreciated!

If I were a betting man, I'd say something in your "Client Security System" bloatware is amiss.

Try uninstalling Client Security and see if the problem disappears. If you really "need" this POS software, then reinstall it and see if the reinstallation fixes whatever was your prior problem. But, if you don't need it your life will be simplified and your computing enjoyment will increase if you leave it in the dustbin of bits and bytes.

p.s. there are Brits in this forum. Could you please confirm that you call garbage men (those folks who come by your house in a truck and cart away the garbage) "dust men?" I found this in a Francais-Anglais dictionary recently and just want to be sure that it really is true.

What kind of bloatware would you suggest?
BTW My wife is a Brit and, yes, they are called dust-men.

They are called "Dust-BIN-men". There was an old TV Sitcom called "the dustbinmen" ... http://www.play.com/play247.asp?pa=pfa& ... tle=649268 . Wow - Brian Pringle, Trevor Bannister, Paula Wilcox - names from a distant childhood! Directed by Michael Apted. I'm going to order it and have it shipped over!

Can anyone explain what particular function this Lenovo provided bloatware performs (or tries to)? All I can find so far is "ThinkVantage Client Security solution application". And if I want to uninstall it, which of the many items in add/remove progs do I go for - ThinkVantage fingerprint software? You mention "Try uninstalling Client Security", but I don't see any entry with 'Client Security" in the name.

Client Security System is one of the vaunted Thinkvantage applications that are heavily advertised as providing something that other machine brands don't provide. One could argue that this is true, they provide a unique sort of headache. But I digress. The idea is that the contents of the notebook are protected so that if the notebook fell in to the wrong hands, that confidential information about the owner's business and clients that might be stored on the hard drive could not be discovered by the thief. I have my doubts, but then what do I know? My bet is that someone who really wanted to get your data out of the laptop would be able to take the hard drive out and with some effort extract your data. It would however be more difficult than without Client Security.

If you don't need this functionality, which includes such things as an encrypted partition on the disk accessible only by password, and certain checks at bootup that make the process interminably long, then by all means uninstall it.

I am not familiar with your own particular hard drive diskload. I have uninstalled CSS from three thinkpads over the last few months. In all cases it was very clear and straightforward. My recollection was that there was only one thing to uninstall and it was entitled something like, "Client Security System," or maybe "Thinkvantage Client Security System." It was one of the programs listed in "ADD or Remove programs" under Control Panel. I don't know why you have trouble locating this entry as it should be fairly straightforward.

Ah - found it, I think! It's there under 'Rescue and Recovery - Client Security Solution' - so I guess it's bundled with all the other R&R stuff.

There's so much stuff from IBM, scattered all over the Add/Remove list - some under just the casual name' (eg, Access Help; Help Center; Message Center; Productivity Center Supplement for ThinkPad; Rescue and Recovery Client Security Solution; Software Installer; System Migration Assistant; Trackpoint Accessibility Features), some under IBM (IBM 32-bit ... java), some under "Thinkpad" (Thinkpad Configuration; Thinkpad Easy Eject Utility; Thinkpad Full Screen Maginfier; Thinkpad Keyboard Customizer utility; Thinkpad Modem; Thinkpad Power Management Driver; Thinkpad Power Manager; Thinkpad Presentation Director; Thinkpad UltraNav Driver; Thinkpad Ultranav Wizard) and finally, under "ThinkVantage" (Thinkvantage Active Protection System; Thinkvantage Away Manager; Thinkvantage Fingerprint Software 5.4; Thinkvantage Productivity Center; Thinkvantage System Update) Phew - that was some list! :)
