is there any SN on 40Y8726
is there any SN on 40Y8726
Is there any serial number on 40Y8726? How to tell a genuine one? THanks.
The serial number is located on a tag underneath the ThinkPad. By pressing the blue Access IBM or ThinkVantage button, click on Learn > System Information for the serial number (at least this is true on the T4x series). I believe the serial number is also displayed when you enter the BIOS menu. Press F1 at beginning of the boot sequence to enter the BIOS.

I don't have part numbers consigned to memory, so I just assumed it was a ThinkPad. I don't have a definitive answer to your question. I do believe you should see a FRU number (IBM speak for model number) somewhere on the accessory, but not necessarily a serial number. My Ultraslim Bay 2nd hard drive adapter only has a FRU number on it, no serial number (that I see).

The part number is a legitimate IBM number, but that is a 40 GB model.

Is it possible that the eBay seller replaced the original 40GB drive with a 80GB?
BTW: I just had a problem with the ORIGINAL link that GomJabbar supplied. However, there is a workaround. If you receive a "page not found" message from Lenovo, simply access this link FIRST, then try the problem link again:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... OME-LENOVO
It deposits a cookie (good for the browsing session) which should solve the missing page problem.

Yes I already assumed 80GB was placed into 40GB enclosure. The problem is: even this ENCLOSURE seems not authentic. The description on the body is IBM USB 2.0 portable hard drive with recovery and rescue. Therer is no 40GB or 80GB. The manufacturing date is 2006-07-01. There is not any Lenovo wording on it! How could that!
Is there any one out there who possesses a genuine IBM 80GB usb2.0 hdd? Can they share some useful information about the features of the item?
For SN, I think my enhanced ultrabay drive adapter have one on the package bag. Only on IBM USB 2.0 PCMCIA card and 1394 PCMCIA card, I can't find the SN (probably they didn't show SN wording?)
Part number and FRU number are as important as serial number. I was doing some stocktake of our company IT assets and took down the SN if they don't have the asset tag as SN is the most unique ID for the genuine IT products.
Thanks.

I would not sweat the lack of Lenovo wording. Look at the following link for the same drive. The IBM logo is clearly on the outside.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-50961
OTOH, the date of manufacture may give pause.
Another thing, it is possible that IBM may be using the same enclosures for the larger hard drives. That could account for the part number mismatch and the manufacturing date anomoly. Have you determined if Rescue and Recovery is installed on the hard drive?
Actually the product I see on the following page looks the same (appearance-wise) to me.

If it was me, I would look at the quality of the appearance to determine if it was genuine. If it looks cheaply made, then it probably is not from IBM. Of course this assumes it is in your possession to view...Product dates

Sorry for the confustion again. The IBM logo will be always on the front of this product. The only difference of the product manufactured before 2005 and after 2005 is there will be "made for Lenovo" wording on the back of the item just under IBM logo. If you check all the IBM PC accessories, I believe it will be the case. Please correct me if I was wrong.
You might be right about the Lenovo branding. I have no information to confirm or deny what you say. I do have to make a correction to what I stated earlier regarding a serial number on my Ultraslim Bay 2nd hard drive adapter. I did not see it earlier - not sure why - but I do see a number that could be a serial number next to where it says made in the Phillipines.
However, I could still reason that if Lenovo was using existing IBM stock, the old part number for the enclosure and lack of Lenovo branding might be what you see. The date of manufacture might be stamped on when the drive is completely assembled. I assume you did not buy or are not going to buy this drive directly from Lenovo. If you are buying from another source, they could have used the old enclosure and put a new drive in it so that it would sell more easily. It could still be an authentic IBM part, just not recently made. If you already have it in your possesion and it works, I would not worry about it. If you are still contemplating on buying it, get it straight from Lenovo, then you know you have the real thing and can put your mind at ease.

For the hard drive itself, I see no necessity to get it from IBM/Lenovo unless you need Rescue and Recovery already installed on the drive. There are many good deals from Newegg and other sources. If you are getting a drive to install in the hard drive bay of a T43, then you may want to go with IBM/Lenovo to avoid the 2010 boot error. But this error is unique to the T43's, and would not apply to an external USB drive anyway.

I really have not researched the best price available for something like that. Last April I bought a 40 GB Fujitsu notebook drive from Newegg for $50 + S&H. Based on that, a 80 GB notebook drive plus an external USB enclosure (plus RnR?) for $115 seems reasonable to me. Others may feel differently.

I should add that the same Fujitsu drive I bought is still selling for $50+ today. This is a 5,400 RPM, 8 MB buffer notebook hard drive. IMO, you should make sure that the 80 GB drive you are looking at is at least 5,400 RPM.
I just now looked at Pricegrabber.com for the 80 GB version of that same Fujitsu drive. Compuvest has them (albiet the slightly older version MHT2080AH) for $65.31. Note that this is a bare drive without any enclosure. I have purchased from Compuvest before.

A quick search on Pricegrabber.com with the following search term USB 2.0 notebook drive enclosure, brought up these. They both come with Apricorn EZ Gig II cloning software.
J&R JR.com HITACHI 0A28314 Hitachi Travelstar Mobile Upgrade Kit 5,400 RPM 80GB - $159.99
B&H Photo Hitachi Notebook PC Upgrade Kit - 80GB 5.4RPM/2.5" HD /Hi-Speed USB 2.0 HD Enclosure - $143.95
