symentec client security license issue

my T60p came with Symantec client security preinstalled, so i'm using Symantec Client Firewall and Symantec Antivirus, they're in my system tray. i received my machine mid december.

i've recently been receiving periodic messages stating There is no content license installed, and that it will not download new content, including virus definitions, firewall rules and intrusion detection signatures.

however, liveupdate still works, and i have been downloading all the new updates.

what is going on?
thanks!

Are you the original owner of the T60? I don't know if Symantec comes pre-installed as a trial, in which case you would need to buy it to register it to you. I have Symantec with a business (bulk) license which will never expire, as long as it is not uninstalled. If you are not the original owner of the laptop, perhaps the previous owner had a one time license and it has expired.

thanks, i am the original owner.

after being on hold for nearly an hour, symantec told me lenovo systems come with client security as a trial, i'm not sur ehow long it's suppose to be, either 60 or 90 days i think? they weren't sure either, but it's been about 60 days, and, live update still works, i guess when live update stops working i'll really have to worry. the guy said live update is suppose to stop working when the trial expires

That bites (sorry) I always fall for these great applications in new computers only to find out that they are trials. Well, there are many AV programs, some free; I use and really like Zone Alarm firewall (free).

You should count yourself lucky that you did not actually PAY for that piece of crap bloatware!
Symantec is the worst resource-hogger in the universe!
Go here to blast that junk from your laptop:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ts ... 3108162039

Then surf over to http://free.grisoft.com and get the free AVG antivirus.
Rather than Zonealarm, go here http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ to get their free firewall. You need to register Comodo but it's free for life!

is it really that bad of a resource hog?
i'm not sure i've heard anyone else complain about it...?

why not just use windows firewall for a firewall?

Go have a read-up on Symantec e.g. here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic57112.html

Use Google and check for 'symantec problems', after that you'll never even want to HEAR the word symantec!

Windows Firewall is a joke really, it only protects against INcoming miscreants, but those that slipped by, have a free hand to do what they like going OUT.
So a PROPER software firewall is a MUST, best assisted by a router which also has a (hardware) firewall and NAT built in.

Hey, that Comodo firewall looks great; I am thinking of downloading it, it took me awhile to figure out the kinks in the ZA firewall, like that I had to put in the IP address of my network adapter and router, etc so it would let them out. Do you have to configure stuff like that yourself with Comodo, or is it that smart?

Also, did you see that Comodo also offers a free AV program for life, have you tried that one? Thanks for the link.

Only the retail home use versions....the Corporate version is a dream, rather than a nightmare....

I use the Symantec Corporate antivirus, but didn't like their firewall. Looked and felt too much like the retail Norton.

Well I am going to stay with my Symantec Corporate then, since that is what came installed on my T22 & I have the bulk license for life. I truly have never had a problem with it, and it updates quietly & quite quickly in the background daily.

Comodo installed without any hassles for my home network (4 PCs and 3 laptops).
If it wants to know something, it asks, you tick 'Remember' and that's it.
I used to have the Agnitum Outpost Pro firewall, but after they made this tremendous balls-up with their latest version 4, I had to throw it off my PC last November. I have a problem-ticket going since the middle of November, and after my umpteenth request for it's status on Feb 19, they still had not solved it!
So I swore, to NEVER use Outpost again.
Comodo is better anyway, PLUS it's free!

I'm quite happy with the free AVG and have not tried the Comodo AV.
If I ever need serious AV protection, there is only one contender for me: Eset NOD32.

you know, if you read up on this thinkpads forums before buying one you're very likely to not want one too, that's how i felt at least, almost didn't get one, everyone' s got so many issues. and it's just because a lot of people have 'em, and these things definetly do get issues, mine's 2 months old and i could list off things that bug me that are apparently not fixable without a reformat and fresh install of xp.
i don't think you'd find as many complaints about some firewall and antivirus programs that barely anyone has heard of.

anyhow, maybe you're right, but, i'll consider it when liveupdate stops, can't beat free for life, i just wish there weren't so many options, and there was one free one that everyone agreed on.

do all the av and firewall programs have updates offered periodically, like live update in symantec?

Not ALL Norton releases are resource hog. Yes they did terrible job in the past, but they current release security and antivirus have a major overhaul in the codec and programs.

I installed Norton Internet Security 2007 in Vista and it is definitely not a resource hog. Everything run fast in Vista without noticeable delays.

I did have a terrible experience with XP and Norton Antivirus 2005. But everything change with their 2007 releases.

But i never tried Client Security for Vista. When upgrading i decided to ditch CS entirely. Maybe it is still a resource hog, i dont know.

Yes, they must update very frequently, since the lovely wackjobs that are out there writing viruses and such don't ever sleep, the AV program also must constantly update your virus and spyware definitions.

If this were a 'general' forum for all sorts of hardware and software, the Thinkpad problems would not nearly be as noticeable.
The big advantage here on TPF, is that you get everything together in just one place, with loads of knowledgeable people.
That said, it looks a lot worse than it is, because many people keep asking the same questions over and over.
allen wrote:i don't think you'd find as many complaints about some firewall and antivirus programs that barely anyone has heard of.
For the opposite reasons as above, there are so many forums on the web, that 1 or 2 complaints on each forum are not noticeable.
If they were all concentrated in just one place, it would look quite different!

You do NOT have a clue what you are talking about. This is a civilized forum, and if the best you can do is take your poor personal experience and generalize it out of all proportion, then please sit down and be quiet.

I was a moderator on www.TechSpot.com for the 'Security on the web' forum for nearly 2 years (until late 2005, same username as here), where I solved most of the virus/spyware problems myself.
However, 8,000 posts later I had enough of other people's ignorance.

I bloody well know what I'm talking about!

I was using Norton Antivirus on my ThinkPad 600E with W2k for a couple of years until I upgraded to a T42. I was using Norton Antivirus on my T42 with XP Pro up until May of last year, at which time I switched to Kaspersky. So I do have some experience with the program.

I find the demonizing of Norton Antivirus to be overblown. I never got infected with a virus while I was using it. Yes it did slow down boot-up times, especially with the 600E, but after boot up I did not have any performance issues.

The problems that I ran into was that after several months, sometimes Live Update would break. This seemed to require a reinstall of Norton AV to fix. Also, when restoring from a backup, this would usually require a reinstall of Norton AV to get it to work properly. I also ran into an incompatibility problem with Cingular Connection Manager's - ByteMobile Acceleration client. This incompatibility prevented me from downloading my POP3 email. I discovered that I could uninstall ByteMobile from CCM and the problem went away (I did not like ByteMobile's image degredation anyway). Later I quit using CCM entirely in favor of other connection software. These were issues, but not deal-breakers.

I definitely prefer Kaspersky to Norton, but I would not have a problem with running Norton AV again if that was what happened to be installed (meaning - if it was already paided for, I would use it).

I find that name-calling and generalizations such as crapware do not mean anything. Usually this is just someone parroting what they have read elsewhere, without real personal experience to back it up. If one goes to some of the AV comparison sites, they will find Norton AV rated right up there with many of the other "recommended" AV alternatives posted on these forums.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/

http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/def ... =82&mnu=82

EDIT: I forgot to add that I discovered after the fact that Norton AV breaks System Restore when running in it's default configuration. I have since read that there is a setting that can be changed in Norton AV to get around this issue. IMO, this is the most serious fault with Norton AV that I see.

i agree a lot of problems come up over and over, like mine, but can i say the search function isn't that great, not be be a complainer, this site is wonderful, has vast amounts of info, and much better than tech support.

This week I got a NOS X41 and ran into the same issue as the OP. The problem was XP's date was ahead one day and when I set the date back I got the error message. Once the date Symantec lists as first date used is on or before XP's date the problem goes away.
