A30 Trackpoint cap removal goof?

Hmm. I removed the Trackpoint cap on my old A30 today. It took a lot of prying and pulling as it had never been off over the last six or seven years. It had gotten quite hard.

When it finally popped off, it had inside it a little hard plastic insert with a square hole on the bottom to mate to the keyboard. Question is, was that insert supposed to stay with the keyboard, i.e., did I break it? (I observed that the new, spare caps shipped with my T60 do not have the insert.)

I stuck it back onto the keyboard and it seems to work, but I'd like to know how its supposed to disassemble so I can replace it with a new one.

Assuming I can get past this, is only the original dome style cap compatable with an A30 keyboard?

Thanks,
RA

The black square should remain on the keyboard, at least all of the ones that I have removed did. If it seems to have popped back into place and the cursor doesn't drift by itself, then I guess there's no harm.

The other styles of trackpoint caps can be used.

Thanks, Ray. I imagined that was the case.

Anyone else have this problem--cap stuck on very tight--and know a way to get it off? My only thought was to get a small scissors or Exacto knife and carefully slit it and then peel it off. It is really stuck on there...
