Hard drive always running

I can hear my hard drive running all the time.

Even when I am not doing anything, it is still like readying or writing something like one second a time.

Is this the problem of caching or not?

What should I do with it?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried the filemon utility? It might give you an idea on which process is using the disk.

What filemon logs is

there are mainly two processes doing the disk operation
many of the operations are like this.

Rtvscan.exe:2180 READ C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Logs\04012007.Log SUCCESS Offset: 4461231 Length: 256

ccEvtMgr.exe:416 QUERY INFORMATION c:\WINDOWS\system32\SymNeti.dll SUCCESS Length: 517848

i logged for half a minute without and active programs.

and the filemon got twelve thousand entrys such as the above.

are they the real time scan thing?
I don't know how to turn them off

I found that option. I think i should switch the option from all types to scan to smart scan.

I found the same thing on my laptop. The Symantec Client Security always running.

I uninstalled and using Zone Alarm now.

Maybe unrelated, but TweakUI allows you to turn off an option, something like "Optimize HD when not in use." I don't know if that means defrag or what, but it wouldn't hurt to turn that off.
