I had no problems with factory settings with audio, but since I reformatted and did a fresh install, I can't get windows to find a driver. I downloaded the driver from lenovo via system update and lenovo.com -- both install, and windows trys to find the driver, but neither can find "the necessary driver."

Running: XP SP2 with no critical updates left from Windows Update

Driver tried:
Micrsoft UAA High Definition Audio class driver (Q888111)
For Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2

I've just had the same problem. The problem is that windows doesn't install the HD AUDIO bus driver with the soundcard.

This is that I did:
I finally got it working!

It seems that this HD Audio bus driver has to be installed with the soundcard device.

Here's what I did.

1.Installed the KB888111da.exe

2. Rebooted

3. Went into the device manager, right clicked the soundcard (no name, just 'PCI-DEVICE'), updated the driver linking to C:\Drivers\Win\Audio\SMAXWDM\W2K_XP. Strangely enough, this doesn't install the audio driver, but it installs the HD audio bus driver instead.

4. Rebooted

5. Installed the SoundMAX audio drivers from IBM (C:\Drivers\Win\Audio\setup.exe)

So now I have sound! Very Happy

Thanks for your replies!
