Client Security Solution Decryption

#1 Post by DutchMaf1a » Tue Apr 03, 2007 11:45 pm

I have a Thinkpad X41 with the latest CSS version installed. When I first purchased the computer I encrypted a bunch of files by right clicking on them and then clicking encrypt. This worked fine, but it seems that the newer versions of CSS doesn't have the on the fly encryption any longer (it uses the secure drive). When I right click on files it doesn't have a "decrypt" option.

I was wondering if there was anyway to decrypt those files that have already been encrypted? I know the key that was used but I don't know how to get around to actually decrypting them. Also, the CSS subsystem icon is no longer in the control panel. It seemed to disappear after I installed a later version, but I can still get to it by going through the start menu. If anybody has any idea how to decrypt these files please let me know.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Are you sure you used CSS and not Windows or another encryption product? The versions of CSS I'm familiar with don't encrypt individual files. Instead it creates a secure volume - like an encrypted disk and you move files into it. If it was CSS it must be a very old version.

The very latest version of CSS actually doesn't support encrypted volumes anymore either. Not entirely sure what it si good for now -storing passwords I guess.

You weren't clear as to whether you can open the encrypted files or not. If you double-click one does it open? Does something ask for the key? Or are the files totally inaccessible? If you can open them you might be able to just copy them. If you can't open them you will probably need to hunt for the original version of CSS or whatever you used to encrypt them. If you have an intact factory recovery partition the original software should be in there.

I am definitely using CSS. I updated everything through the thinkvantage updater. When it used to let me encrypt/decrypt files it was when I first purchased my laptop. It must have been a very old version. As of right now I can't open the file because it is encrypted.

I think my only option is going to be to go back to the factory state and try to decrypt it from there. Hopefully that will work. Thanks for your help.

Almost seems like CSS is getting worse the more releases it goes through. Used to have individual file encryption, then moved to privatedisk, now nothing...

:::

Maybe because WinXP already have "individual file encryption"
build in.
