What is the best way to determine the new or refurbished status of a Thinkpad?

It has been a while since I have purchased a refurbished IBM product, but it was clearly marked. New product always looks new to me: Sealed boxes, battery not in machine, all accessories in plastic, computer in plastic with a seal, sticky (gooy) labels on the power cords, and finally, has that "new" smell about it. I have never had any confusion in product from IBM.
In Canada, it is a criminal offence to represent a refurbished product as new and unused and sell it as new. ... JDH

Thanks JDH. I've determined that it is more-or-less new. The reseller I bought from purchased it as excess Lenovo iventory without a warranty, but bundled it with a three year MACK extended warranty. So new-ish.
T 43 P M 770(2.13GHz), 1GB RAM, 80GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD, 64MB ATI Radeon X300, CD-RW/DVD-RW, Intel 802.11abg wireless(MPCI), Bluetooth/Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, Fingerprint reader, 6 cell Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro -- $1199.00
Good deal? $900 was my absoulte max, but I went higher for this fully loaded unit.

Off ebay? I know they sell there.
It is still considered either refurb or remanufactured.
