T-40 running very slow !

#1 Post by kingman99 » Fri Apr 06, 2007 4:58 pm

Hi
I just received my new (used) T-40 and all that l can say is that it's running too slow. In fact my 600x compared to the T-40 both running on dial runs like it's on DSL compared to the T-40.

What gives? The T-40 came with a lot already installed (various programs), maybe too much! But no matter what something is wrong and it's making me crazy.

It takes maybe 2/3 minutes after l turn it on for the XP screen to boot itself.

I tried running Avast (dial up) and it said over 3 hrs and while l was watching it, it took maybe 6 minutes for the counter to change one minute.

Help

Thanks

Alan

Guess you need to do 2 things:
1) fix your email address here on thinkpads.com
2) zero your hard disk, then re-install from scratch. You don't know what trojans, rootkits, viruses etc. may be lurking on it.

T40 was just cleaned and all the programs were downloaded

All that l did was download AOL. There are too many programs to just forget them.

When l turn the computer on it takes 5-10 minutes to get to the xp screen.

And l would rather start just deleting the various programs one by one.

I would run hijack this but it would probably take me 6 hrs.

Wow, that's even slower than the time it takes my 200MHz/128MB Packard Bell to get to the XP screen.

Is the recovery partition still instact? Why not just restore to the factory state? If the seller included software like MS Office, Photoshop etc., these are all illegal installations and should be removed anyway.

If you don't want to restore to factory state, use the Control Panel to uninstall all software you don't need, run Ad-Aware to remove any spyware, AVG Free to scan for any viruses, and CCleaner to remove miscellaneous crap. Then defrag the HDD. Hopefully that will help a lot. If not, you really should restore the HDD to factory state.

How do l get to the recovery partition? Keep in mind that l'm a novice!

The seller installed a whole list of things plus l'm running with a COA wind xp pro

right now spy & something is running now!

I deleleted AVG 7.5 why l have no idea but l wanted to load Avast but it was downloading so slow l gave up on it

How do l get cc cleaner?

Nothing to defrag l tried that
l tried to restore

By the way l'm waiting on Bill to fix my e-mail but l get pm's all the time and my e-mail address is correct.

Thanks

www.ccleaner.com . I run this program at least once a day on every computer.
