System Update install/storage location

I have been using D:\Drivers as the location for Software Installer to download new software/driver versions to. I removed what I thought were only the older versions of each program (Software Installer saves each set of install files for each update) and kept the most up to date; however, I must have deleted something I shouldn't have because now Software Installer does not proceed past the first step - it does not read the local database / XML files for what I have locally installed.

So, I figured it was time to move on to System Update. I ran it and allowed it to upgrade itself. Then I allowed it to install the updates it found. I encountered a few issues:

1. It installs everything into C:\Program Files\Lenovo or C:\Program Files\Thinkpad. And it appears to also save install files without the option of deleting them. How can I change this? My C: partition is very small and I had trouble even executing this first update.

2. The other issue was that it installed a second copy of the Power Management software - I only knew this because I could see two green battery icons near the system tray.

The most urgent problem is changing the install dir for System Update so that I can use my D: partition.

I have a Thinkpad T43 2668

You could try the following ...

Copy all the folders under the Program Files\Lenovo\System Update path to your D: drive.

Go into the registry and find the following entry,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\System Update
and in that entry there is a key called InstallationDir.
Change that key to match your D: drive location and try it again.
