Rescue and Recovery 4.0 -- no GUI, no Backup Service

#1 Post by CLCollins718 » Sun Apr 29, 2007 11:15 am

Just upgraded to RnR 4.0 (previously had 3.1). When I try to launch the user app, it appears that nothing happens. But it turns out that, if you look in Task Manager, rnr_gui.exe is there for a while, then exits without notice.

In rr.log, I see:

> Sun Apr 29 10:55:29 2007 RescueRecovery: GUI Startup: Service not found.

In Services, I see "TVT Backup Service" in a stopped state. I try starting it. I get a dialog box that says:

> Could not start the TVT Backup Service on Local Computer.
>
> Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Corresponding to this attempt (i.e., any such attempt), I see an entry in the System Event log which says:

> Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the TVT Backup Service service to connect.

Which is a bit strange, since 30,000 milliseconds is 30 seconds and the dialog box and the event appear immediately.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

Solved my own problem:

Ran the service executable rrservice.exe from the command line. In this mode, it put up a dialog box complaining that it could not find 'ordinal 26' in 'ZLIB.DLL'.

Searched for ZLIB.DLL on my system. Found quite a number of copies, of various sizes, dates, version info, author, etc.

Examined the system PATH and found that some dubious application directories, some of which contained ZLIB.DLL, were present and/or inappropriately placed in the path ordering.

Revised the PATH appropriately.

Problem resolved.
