Wipe drive

#1 Post by Oaklodge » Sun May 13, 2007 12:31 pm

I have 40GB drive from my T40.

What is the best way to totally wipe the drive before selling it ?

I DO NOT have a USB floppy drive that I can boot from but I can boot from CD.

It depends on what is on it. Since no method that leaves the drive operable is foolproof, either:
1. use one of the many formatting tools that wipe out the data and do it several times, or,
2. remove the drive and keep it, selling the machine without a drive.

Be sure to make or have recovery CD's to give the buyer.

I guess I should have been more clear ...
I'm not selling the machine, its the drive I want to sell

How do I run the software, since I don't have a floppy drive to boot off.

The only possibility would be to boot off either a CD or the hard disc itself but if I do that, can I then wipe it too ?

There are lots of boot CD's around. I have Phlak, Knoppix and Barts PE on hand. Barts PE takes more effort, but is customizable and is a Windows machine, whereas the first two are Linux (but prebuilt and easy to use). ... JDH

Also, you can use a recovery CD, boot it, wait for the first stable screen, exit, fdisk the drive, and then format the drive.

Get yourself a 2.5" USB enclosure, they are perfect for such purposes.

hum a 40Gb 2.5" is not worth a lot. I would suggest to scrapp it properly (use of a hammer is recommended). Do a google search if you really want to go on and sell this piece of hardware. You should find plenty of software that would do that shreeding operation. Just make sure you are getting one that is following some sort of industry standard.

Regards.

I always use IBM SDD to quickly or completely delete drives, I heard somewhere it can be used to delete a HDD to the USA defence ministry standards, you can get it here:
