Would someone else with this version of Access Connections please try to create a profile containing only a wired connection? I'm very curious to find out if my experience is unique, or whether I've actually found a bug here.

I am using Access Connections 4.23 (and have done so since mid-January). I create wired and wireless profiles with no problems. Is there a version 4.23a? I just checked Lenovo for my T41 and it still lists V4.23 from mid-January.

The age-old solution for Access Connections within XP is to uninstall Access Connections and all the profiles, uninstall the NIC, restart, install the NIC, restart, install Access Connections and then build profiles.

I have uninstalled and installed new wireless NIC's, but I have never had to uninstall the wired NIC, and I don't know that you should either. There is also a repair function for TCP/IP that you might try once Access Connections is uninstalled.

I can say this: Access Connections and the IBM 11 a/b/g (Atheros) card has always worked for me on my own T41, and AC plus Intel 2200 or later has worked for me on client machines.

I can create a file that includes a wired connection, but not one that is exclusively wired . . . i.e. the wireless adapter is de-selected in the list of adapters associated with the profile.

I'll try the uninstall/reinstall recommendation, once the service guy is done with my laptop (I've had it for less than 2 weeks and it's hung hard 3 times, bluescreened 4, and the display goes momentarily wacky on a very unpredictable schedule). Thanks for the suggestion!

Try going back to 4.23. That version is on my T41 and is working perfectly, so consider that. It is still available on Lenovo's web site as I write this (79cn76ww). ... JDH

What I find curious is that the "Faulting application" is acmaingui.exe v. 4.21.0.0. If you've got 4.23a installed--and it is, in fact, causing the problem--I would expect it to be cited as the 'faulting application' . . . I'd try completely uninstalling AC, reinstalling, and trying again. There seems to be some confusion between versions . . . I think I have a 'wired only' profile on my other machine, but I'll have to check at work. Later . . .

But back to the main question: I do indeed have a 'wired only' connection in AC 4.23. I'm using it right now (I'm at work). In the "Edit Profile: name" window, General Settings tab I have:

1. name of location profile: name
2. type of network connection: Wired LAN (Ethernet)
3. choose the network adapter you want to use at this location: Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection
'Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication' is unchecked
'Disconnect from the network when switching' is checked

These settings have never generated an error for me . . . Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

Seems like there is a version 4.4 of AC to be released in a few days. Might try that one as well when available. I guess version 4.4 require a driver update and hotkey features update as well. Another option like jdhurst suggested is to go back to 4.23.

btw: Where did you get version 4.23a? I never seen this one released to the public.

Honestly, I have no idea. It must've been through System Update; when I went to look for the installation distribution on my local hard drive, I found it in C:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERS\CONWIZ. I know *I* didn't put it there

Version 4.41 of AC is released and available now. You could try that one and see if that solve the problem. Also ThinkPad Wireless LAN driver 5.3.0.35 support AC 4.4 or higher according to the release notes of the driver. So even if using driver version 5.3.0.35 with AC 4.23 might work it's not supported and most likely not tested by Lenovo.

If version 4.41 does not solve the problem you could try to uninstall AC, reboot, remove all folders/files left after the uninstall and also cleanup the part of registry related to AC before a reinstall. I had a crash issue in the past even if not exactly identical to this one that was related to some settings in registry. I had to manually recreate my profiles and i had pretty many, but at least it solved the problem.

By the way i have the same hardware and driver/software versions as you except that i use AC 4.41 without any problems. I didn't upgrade the wireless driver before AC 4.41 was released though.

Thanks for the info Wiz. I had previously searched high and wide on Lenovo's site for version 4.41, but I could only find 4.23. After reading your post, I searched for a link in these forums and found it.

Unfortunately, despite high hopes, the problem remains. I even tried completely uninstalling and wiping out the directory and registry settings as suggested.

It's frustrating too because the download page says this exact problem was fixed as of ver. 4.31 (which I don't think was a public release). Anyway, the problem persists. I may try totally uninstalling it again and all the network drivers as well. But I don't have time right now.

If I have success I will certainly reply back. If anyone else comes up with anything definitive, please report it. Thanks!

After a uinstall and reboot i assume you deleted this registry keys and everything below them:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\Access Connections"
and
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lenovo\Access Connections"
When you reinstalled i also assume you did not import any existing location profiles and recreated them manually? When i had this problem i exported all the profiles before i uninstalled AC and imported the profiles after a reinstall, but then the problem was still there so had to manually recreate the existing profiles that was causing the problem.

If yes to both i guess what solved my problem didn't help in your case.

For AC 4.41 it was released by Lenovo a couple of days ago, but because the installshield package didn't work as supposed to they removed it again and now once again released a proper installshield package. I guess that's why you couldn't find it.

I have the exactly same problem. It appeared after replacing my IBM 802.11a/b/g (Atheros AR5001X+) with the IBM 802.11a/b/g II (Atheros AR5004X) so I think it' s a driver problem. I already have most recet driver (v5.3.0.35) installed.

Not sure what version of AC you use, but the driver version 5.3.0.35 is only supported using AC 4.4 or newer according to the release notes. There is also some requirements about the hotkey feature set when using driver version 5.3.0.35. Unless you already got the supported versions i would start with a upgrade.

A colleague of mine did the same thing, but didn't remove the old driver first and had some problems. When i replaced my wireless adapter i removed the old first and removed some entried left in registry and had no problems. Cannot remember if i reinstalled AC.

Are you using Windows Vista? And the reinstall is that using a recovery image or a standard Windows CD and then install all the drivers, thinkpad software?
When i replaced my wireless adapter i was able to edit the profiles and uncheck the old wireless adapter, then save and edit again to select the new wireless adapter.

According to the release notes of hotkey version 2.03.0705 Windows XP is only supported for some newer thinkpad models and T41 is not one of them. So unless i'm wrong the hotkey 2.03.0705 is not supported under WinXP for any T models except T60 or newer. For older T models it's supported under Vista only.

Because of that i use hotkey version 1.31.0610 on my T43p without any of the problems you describe. Did you upgrade the hotkey to version 2.03.0705 before that problem started?

I just downgraded to older hotkey version. Did not help. I also wonder why it may help since the error is in acmaingui.exe which is part of access connections and not of hotkey package. The hotkey package is only responsible for the FN+F5 menu regarding access connections.

Well i don't know if it help or not. Just tried to help, but sometimes software might conflict and cause problems even if the two of them is not related at all. The hotkey software is doing a bit more then just the fn-f5 and it was just a suggestion since that version is not supported under WinXP on your computer.
What i do know is that i have a T43p and used a standard WinXP CD with SP2, all windows updates then installed the drivers and some of the thinkpad software from Lenovo and do not have any problems. I do not use CSS and Rescue and Recovery though. Nither did i use software installer or system update to install the driver and thinkpad software. So i don't think it's the AC software alone that is causing this problem because then we would all have the same problem when using AC. You did it pretty much the same way as i did when i installed the computer and the hardware is almost the same (except that i got a T43p) so i don't know what is causing the problem on your computer. Seems like some others have the same problem as well.
Strange that a clean windows installation with only the drivers and thinkpad software still cause this problem.

Yes i got IE7 installed with all the updates released for IE7. For antivirus i use nod32, only use the built-in windows firewall (since i got a pretty advanced hardware firewall) and do not use any anti-spyware application or other security software that should interrupt or cause problems for AC.

Same problem here, with an Intel 2915abg WLAN, but I doubt that this is a problem with the WLAN driver.

I reinstalled everything after problems with the dreaded SVCHOST.EXE 100% load problem (now there's a fix by M$).

Every time I try to create a new profile with the ethernet adapter involved, I get an application error in ACMainGui.exe (acon.dll).

Downgrading to 4.23 did not solve the problem for me. I think the problem is related to newer AC versions but has not been recognized by many people because the already have their profiles in place.

I just created a wired LAN profile, just having the Wired LAN adapter (Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection) chosen. I had the two boxes unchecked to Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for Ethernet and Disconnect from the network when switching to a different connection. I had no problem creating this profile. I do not have a Ethernet connection at my present location to test the actual connection.

The main problem might be AC, but it's not like everyone have this problem so i think there is something in addition to AC and not AC alone that cause this problem. I been using every version of AC since 3.x and i have not seen this problem on my computer. I create and delete all kind of profiles all the time so it's not like i already got my profiles in place. Currently i have 40 profiles, but that number change almost every week. Actually i tried to create all kind of wired only profiles to produce this error, but couldn't do it.

Our only hope are the Lenovo business customers. Because whenever I filed a bug (as a home-user) at IBM/Lenovo, I just got a stupid response that only said "please do a system recovery to original state" (wtf!). I never got really helpful answers, nor have the problems ever been forwarded to the responsible persons so there is little hope until some business customers report the bug.
