Has the software become flaky

I have or have had Thinkpads starting with the 755, 760,770,
A20P,A21P, A30P, A31P, X20, X30, X31, and T43P as well as two
Transnotes.
In most cases more than one.
Now with two T60P's.
2623-DDU and 2007-8JU.
One example
I dutifully did the auto windows up patches, the Lenova updates
and anything else that came up to be upgraded.
Lost use of Sonic. Deleting Security Client fixed that.
Networking difficult. Deleting Drive Image 9 fixed that.
Compacting all folders in Outlook Express- sent .BAK files to
recycle bin.
Part of the Recovery process used an adjacent partition
for .cab files
Slowly I'm getting a handle on all of this.
When I do-- and get a cloned hdd.
I will go back to my past practice.
