I'm thinking about picking one up to use for an X21 laptop.
I'm wondering if i would be able to boot from it if i put in a IBM dvd-rom.

I'm not sure if I have that exact one, but I certainly have one very much like it, which I use with various T4x model ThinkPads.

It works well, but I don't think I've ver tried to boot off it, so I can't comment on that aspect of your question.
