After reinstalling a fresh Windows installation, where can I get the IBM software from?

Like at this page:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... -43800#usb

I can find drivers and some software, but where is the other stuff like:
Access ThinkPad
Access Connections
Access Help
Access Support
ThinkPad Utilities
IBM Update Connector

Thanks.

Thinkvantage. Install it and run it to let it do the updating.

However few things you mentioned only comes with factory pre-load.

First of all, I believe you have the names of some of the utilities on your list wrong.

Access ThinkPad - ?
Access Connections - Access Connections
Access Help - Access Help online User's Guide
Access Support - Message Center ?
ThinkPad Utilities - System Utilities
IBM Update Connector - Not used anymore, replaced with System Update

Under the Notes section at the top you will see the following line which has links in it to more files: "View all files for the ThinkPad X30, X31, and X32 systems."

You should find all the files there except for the commercial software such as Record Now! and WinDVD.

Rather than a fresh install, can't he do that selective recovery and pick and choose what to get rid of?

Also, is it not possible to back up the particular registry info, and files for the apps that can't be downloaded and restored, and then reinstate them after a fresh install?

It "sounds" theoretically possible...

Selective recovery is not available on the X31.

If you save the C:\IBMTOOLS\ folder and subfolders you will have the installation files for all the IBM included software - even apps such as WinDVD and RecordNow!. No need to export (save) Registry Keys.

He posted in the general forum, so I meant it generally as well. ;)

Generally no. Only the 6x series allows selective recovery. Anything earlier does not.

Only the 60 series shipped after July 06 do.

I think I have got all the Thinkpad software I need, thanks to the help in this thread. Cheers.

Now I am wondering something like you are. I cannot find this "PreDesktop Area". I used my Acronis Disk Director CD, and it could not see any hidden partition. I guess that it has been wiped from my machine by the previous owner?

See the following for info on the Hidden Protected Area.

You can try the following if pressing F11 at the beginning of the boot sequence does not start Rescue and Recovery.

Rescue and Recovery - Recovery repair diskette

Here is something else to consider.

IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore - The Access IBM and Enter key do not start into the IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore environment
