R50 qxga screens! In an r60e ?

After reading http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... light=qxga I'm all excited about the possibility of getting a qxga screen. I have to upgrade my screen at some point, it's just a matter of when and how, so....

I gather, though, that
a) they are hard to find
b) the response time might be REALLY slow, about 60 ms
c) It might not be compatible with an r60e, or might need a different inverter. I don't quite see why it would need a different inverter, though since the inverter is for the backlight, though maybe it does in practice.
d) they are all flexview (IPS), that's good.

I have the equipment to maybe make a cable from scratch or maybe some sort of adapter, if it is just the physical form that prevents things from fitting and working. I could make a number of them almost as easily and send them out to people, or get them professionally made (it's actually not that expensive, it's basically a custom flex pcb, I could maybe make or have made 10 or more for $6 each for example) if there is enough demand around here.

Do you think an r50 or r50p QXGA screen could work in an r60e with the right cable?

Yeah, that's the thread I just linked to. Basically you appear to be saying the cable doesn't fit.... well as I said it's not hard to make a cable. I'm sure an EE could get it all working in the blink of an eye....

It's possible that the memory controller on the r60's mobo (this is integrated graphics) can't properly control the lcd, but what are the odds... the physical interface is the same I think, and standard. Here's some info I've gathered

Mr. qxga must have discrete video or something, since the integrated graphics don't seem to support more than uxga over lvds.

datasheets for the chipsets used in the r60 (and t60? Looking at the hmm t60s and r60s seem to have different connectors for the lcd)

I see the integrated graphics in an r60 don't support qxga though, so I'd need an external graphics card too though....

so I guess I'd need the cable, the adapter, and graphics card, the screen, and the inverter (maybe, why do you need a different inverter??) the member "bontistic" has the cable and inverter? I found a source of qxga screens, I don't know the part numbers though (he says he has 15).
Then I make the adapter myself.... I'll need the pinouts for the connector on the r60's mobo, and the pinouts for the r50s mobo....

so 12 bucks for cable & inverter?

screen, 300 usd , oh, then I can sell my old screen for $50

so 272 plus shipping, maybe 300 plus the graphics adapter (and I have to install it....) for a qxga screen.

So who's interested? Plenty of interest expressed in pianowizard's but now you all run and hide when I suggest actual work to make it happen.

'k, I looked through the 945gm chipset datasheet, and the game is up for me (r60(e) integrated graphics). The graphics controller totally doesn't support the signaling rates required for qxga.

If you have discrete graphics you might stand a chance.

You'd check the datasheet for the graphics chip - which has the digital video out (DVO over LVDS) transmitter built in (it's the transmitter and the cable to the panel that's the limiting factor here, the rest falls into place), and see what resolutions it supports.

Then get the cable and inverter and qxga screen that go together, and I think the easiest way if the cable didn't physically fit would be to make a simple adapter that joined the end that is supposed to connect to the mobo to the mobo without changing the electrical properties of the cable too much.

I'll see if I can address the inverter and required cable later when I've got a second...
