HELP: Stolen laptop, trying to rescue files from RnR

Posted: Wed Jun 20, 2007 2:42 am
by Cupol
Hello!

This is my first visit to this forum. I've tried to search it and the web for possible answers. Even called IBM Support to no use. Read all the manuals about RnR at IBM.

This is the story.
Last Wednesday my boss's laptop, Lenovo Thinkpad Z60 from 2006, got stolen from his car.
The same morning ha had done a scheduled RnR had run to a network partition.

Ordered a new computer, this time a Thinkpad T60 with Vista, in hope to make it easier to restore his Z60 RnR to it. The Z60 had Windows XP.

I've now been trying to restore or at least rescue some of his files from the RnR but no luck. I have a RnR 3.0 boot cd witch is the same version as the RnR stored from the Z60.

I try to boot the T60 with the RnR 3 cd, which works. I then specify the network drive where the RnR folder is shared and tries to use every restore option available. But I can't get the backup to show oint the list of avialable backups, less get it to restore files.
Is there any trick here to make it visible?
Is it tied to a specific machine ID?

I've made an extra copy of the stored backup to remove the hidden folder option and not to corrupt the original files. No password is set on the Backup. So the backup archives are visible in normal Windows Explorer for any other computer. But I can't open the archive files with WINZip, WinRar etc. Is there any other tool except RnR which can open RnR archives?

RnR was a big advantage I though and therefore bought Thinkpads despite the higher price compared to HP, DELL. Now it seems unusable and has tricked me in to THINK I had a backup that renders to be unusable.

I also tried to restore to a completely blank disk with RnR boot cd on a desktop machine. No luck. The backup wont show in the list on stored backups on the network drive in the RnR application.

IBM support could not explain how to recover from a RnR when the original computer is no longer there. They had no tools, no tips or anything. Only talked about disk recovery companies. But the DISK IS NOT BROKEN. I HAVE THE ARCHIVES RIGHT HERE IN FRONT OF ME!! ;(

So please HELP!!
1. Is it possible to get it to restore with RnR to another computer. This must be a common problem when loosing a Laptop or a total disk crash.
2. Is there any other tool to browse and restore individual files from a RnR archive.

In the future I will only use common commercial backup tools that stores files in standard Zip archives and not be bound by a brand name tools own file format. Especially not a tool with so few options and bound to the specific modell.

ANY HELP is appreciated

Thanks in advance,

Henke

THis is the TVT.txt in the RnR archive whicvh I can locate but not get to show on RnR 3 application.
I have checked that the network adresses corrspond to the shared address.

Any tweaks here I can do to make it show?

On thought...

Move the R&R backup off to another location.
Make a new R&R backup from the new machine to the old location.
Now you will have tricked the new copy of R&R into expecting a backup to be in that location.
Delete the new backup using Explorer and replace it with the Original R&R backup.

Whether R&R will now see the original backup and be able to open it is another question. If not you might also try setting the date on the machine to match the date of the old backup before making the new backup.

If it does see the backup, I would recommend doing individual file and folder restores to get his data back rather than trying to make a Z series image run on a T series.

I am not aware of any third party tools that will open an R&R backup, but I think you should be able to find a way to pry it open with R&R. The only thing that might make that impossible is if it was encrypted with a key that is on the stolen laptop - but I don't think the archives are encrypted by default.

Good luck,

Ed Gibbs

Thanks!
I'll try that.

The Third Party tool to open R&R's could probably be a very lucrative market....

I just ran across some information that applies to you. It appears that the only way you can recover those files from your network partition backup is from using Rescue and Recovery version 3 from within Windows. You cannot recover individual files from a backup not stored on the C:\ partition when you are booting up from the Rescue Media CD.
Lenovo wrote:Symptom
The Rescue Files & Folders application cannot find backups on the local hard disk drive from the IBM Rescue and Recovery environment. This can be caused by the following conditions:
<snip>
4. The computer was booted using the IBM Rescue and Recovery boot CD and the backup was not stored in the C:\ partition

Solution
In the 4th condition, Rescue files and folders does not support restoring files from remote backups (CD, DVD) in the IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore environment. If a single file needs to be restored then restart your system and perform the action from Rapid Restore Ultra while in Windows. Although you may receive a message of no backups found, this function is not supported.
I am not sure, but that last sentence seems to have a typo. I believe it should read: "Although you may receive a message of no backups found, this function is supported."

IBM Rescue and Recovery™ with Rapid Restore™ - Rescue Files & Folders cannot find backup

EDIT: I forgot to add that I use StompSoft Backup MyPC, and with it you can recover individual files or directories from CD or DVD backups. I am not familiar with Network Backups, but I think it is supported. I do believe this is pretty good backup software. It looks like Migo Software has bought up Backup MyPC. Migo PC BackUp

Here is something else I ran across that might apply to your situation.

IBM Rescue and Recovery™ with Rapid Restore™ - Backup located on a network share is overwritten

Thanks for your investigations; I really appreciate your effort

I still cannot see the backup

According to the TVT.txt file the version is 3.0

I've tried to use another ThinkPad with RnR 3.10 which has been using a networks share, lets call it 192.168.0.2/user1.

I switched share so the stolen laptop backup now is shared as 192.168.0.2/user1. I can open that folder and see the "RRbackups" folder. Also I've replaced the path in the TVT.txt file to be corresponding to its actual path now.

I open RnR in Windows, select Restore individual files and choose network. Only a blank row appears in the available backups which can be marked. But in the next step no files are available to restore.

I'm sure the backup is not overwritten.
But it seems the RnR is very picky about what to restore from and it's tied to its own backups in some sort of way.
If it only was possible to open the each 48 MB archive file with a standard archive tool such as Zip/WinRar, etc and extract the files needed it would be fine.

I'll have to take another Thinkpad and install RnR 3.0 to give it one more shot.

I'll also buy other image programs and a normal backup program such as AISBackup which stores in standard Zip.
In the future we will not buy any more Lenovo ThinkPads at our company. The Thinkvantage suite was one main reason for putting up the 20-30% extra dollars for the same hardware specs compared to HP/Compaq , Dell, etc. I've had too much troubles with destroyed configurations because Thinkvantage suite already. (Loosing all Security chip info when using Thinkvantage update, not able to use old backups from same computer between Restore Ultra, RnR 3.0, 3.10, 4.0, loosing all uninstall info cuz of PC Doctor, too many Thinkvantage programs eating up the RAM and CPU at start-up)

I think Iv'e got something going now.

A little trial and error.
In the backup from the stolen laptop there was no "common" folder which some other RRBackups from other Thinkpads have. So I created one and move the files in the root RRBackup foldes in to "common".
No luck.

But if I took the same "common" folder associated with the same machine as i try to make the restore from, but use the archive files from the stolen laptop, it now lists the stolen laptop's backup sets.

I'm now restoring files from the stolen laptop's base RnR set.
:)
I'll write more when I'm done.

NOOO!

I can now browse the files from the backup when choosing "restore individual files". I can see 4 previous backup sets.
I choose some small files to restore. And tries to restore to original place. Also made sure it will not replace any existing files.

The process starts and progress gets 100%, folders get created at destination, but no files. Restore done 0 files restored!

Now it's even more frustrating... So close, yet so far away.

SUCCESS!

I've finally managed to get the backup back.

It wasn't easy and RnR is not a very good app.
Not only are the backups tied to a specific release of the program, but also it hard to locate backups on a network share (impossible from Pre desktop at least in 3.0) it's also impossible to install certain versions on some machines and/or if you have had a better version installed.

Ie.
Rnr 3.0 Windows version (the 100MB install without pre desktop) won't install on my machine. It complains about wrong tvt file. I tried alter language settings etc. No luck.

Rnr 3.0 won't install on a machine that have had RnR 4 or 3.1. Eventhough I have uninstalled Rnr 3.1/RnR4 . 3.0 Install Complains that a better version already exists and won't install 3.0.

Rnr 3.10 can't restore files from a 3.0 RnR backup. Although it finds the archive and begins the restore, no files are restored.

Rnr won't locate backups if you just point it to a specific location on a network share. It will only find it if you have made a real backup there with THIS installation.

This is how I made it to work.

1. Completely reformat another Thinkpad R50e with Windows XP Pro installation CD. Delete ALL partitions and reinstall XP.
I made a backup of ALL driver folders to a USB disk, as they are needed to get the system working.

(The IBM Rapid Restore Cds I hade made when buying the machine didn't work either.... So RnR, Rapid restore is NOTHING TO PUT YOUR TRUST IN!! )

2. Copy the drivers back and install them one by one to get the Thinkpad R50e system up.

3. Install the LARGE 490 MB RnR 3.0 installation.

4. Make a RnR backup of the system to a networkshare ie \\NETWORKCOMPUTER\MYTHINKPAD

5. I hade to compare the TVT.txt from my old backup with the new one. Copy all new pathes (\\NETWORKCOMPUTER\MY_r50e) to the old one. copy some values to manipulate that the new tvt.txt contains the previous old backups sets. I used WinMerge for this. http://winmerge.org/

ALot of values seems to have to be correct. Size of disk etc. I hade to alter all values to match the R50e drive from the old values(z60) in order to be able to restore to the R50e.

6. Put my old Z60-backup at the destination where I just made the new R50e backup.

Change \\NETWORKCOMPUTER\MY_r50e -> \\NETWORKCOMPUTER\MYTHINPAD_r50e_2

and \\NETWORKCOMPUTER\MYTHINPAD_Z60 (folder containg the backups from the solen Z60 machine) -> \\NETWORKCOMPUTER\MY_r50e

7. In windows, with RnR 3.0 restore from my backup location \\NETWORKCOMPUTER\MY_r50e. Hopefully the Z60's backups now will show in the list

8. Restore the needed files.

9. After restore you probaly need to change the Owner of the NTFS protected files, files under each user's My documents and Desktop are usually owned by a specific user.

In WIndows XP turn off Simple File sharing in order to bring up the Security tab when choosing properties of a folder.

Change the owner of the folder to your new system and user.
Reade more about that here.

I am glad you finally were able to retrieve your files. It's a shame it took so much effort to figure out and implement your solution.

I really think Lenovo/IBM should be ashamed of including this software (RnR) with their computers.

I've been in a similar situation as the OP for a while, since I installed Vista on my T60 and thought I could retrieve my personal files from a backup made with RnR on a network drive.

I have located the files in the hidden directory "RRbackups" but I can not get RnR to find them. As Cupol says, a third party (or WHY NOT from Lenovo/IBM?) tool for retrieving RnR backups from anywhere would be the best. I can't believe it's not a function in RnR already.

I really like the Thinkpad as a computer, but the software... nah.

Usinge Rescue & Recovery on a non IBM/Lenovo machine

Mine is a problem that must have come up before, but I have been unable to find the answer thus far (this thread being the closest I've come).

I had my T-40 stolen several weeks ago while travelling in a foreign country. I have ordered a new T-60. In the meantime, I would like to recover key files which reside in my R&R backup files. I had periodically run R&R, saving to a USB hard drive, and had created an IBM 'Rescue and Recovery ' CD.

My problem is that I haven't been able to run R&R from another, non-IBM/Lenovo (HP, actually) machine. This doesn't surprise me, given the different POST/boot start up processes.

However, I am hoping that someone can point me to one of the executable programs residing on the rescue CD that I could run from within WindowsXP (or another DOS, if necessary) on my HP laptop.

I have looked at the R&R 'Red Book' on the Lenovo website, but didn't find the answer there.

Any help would be very, very appreciated.

Thx.

- Charlie

I won't say this is impossible, but I would expect it to be darned difficult. Looking at what the OP in this thread had to go through to recover his files to a similar machine, I think the T60 is going to be a bear to get the files back on, but the HP would be way more work than it's worth.

R&R by design will not run on an HP - that would be the first hurdle for you to get through. It will probably want to boot to the R&R environment during the recovery, so you'll need to set the HP up with an IBM style Pre-desktop area and boot sector. Then you'll need to fool R&R into thinking it's running on an IBM machine - no idea how to do that, it may just look for the Pre-Desktop area, or it may look in BIOS for a valid machine type.

Your best bet would be to try to borrow or buy an identical machine to the one that was stolen, then try to follow the steps in this thread. Or you might be able to get the T60 to work with some variation of the steps in this thread. If you insist on trying to get the HP working, post the results - they should be informative and helpful for others.

Normally, if you boot up from your Rescue Media CD into Rescue and Recovery, you can rescue R&R backup files from your USB hard drive. Are you saying that the Rescue Media CD will not boot up on a non-IBM/Lenovo computer?

FTR, I believe that the version level of your Rescue Media CD has to be the same version as your R&R backups.

>>"Are you saying that the Rescue Media CD will not boot up on a non-IBM/Lenovo computer? >>

Yes.

Additionally, today I tried something different: Downloading the 400+ meg. Rescue and Recovery installation executable file from Lenovo. Unfortunately, it recognized that I was trying to install on a non-lenovo machine, and exited. (I do note that the instructions accompanying the exe file do say that it should install on some non-Lenovo machines.)

I found out today that my new T60 shipped today (over a week prior to the original scheduled ship date of 8/30). So my last hope is that I can install R&R on it, & that it then will recognize the backups.

It will come with R&R installed. It may have a different version than what your backup was made with and that might be a problem - not sure. Let us know how it works out.

The above information is invaluable for those who have a similar issue as it seems to be the only help that I have found on the entire web.
I had the far more simple issue of restoring files from previous backup on a previous installation. I had clean installed Vista x64 on my X61, shipped with a dysfunctional x86 installation.

Following the tips from above I did the following:
1. Make a copy of the existing backup folder.
2. Unshare the existing network RRBackups directory and create a new share with the same external name but in a different internal directory.
3. Create a new Rescue and Recovery backup to this second folder.
4. Unshare the new backup folder and reshare the original folder with the original backup using the same share name.
5. Restore files.

I am using R&R 4.2 on an X61, which permits me to open network shares from the service partition upon reboot.

I am sure there is an easier way to do this by using the mapdrv command and editing the R&R application data. I have had no luck seeking it at the moment.

Thanks to egibbs and Cupol

Interesting. Would it be a problem trying to recover data backed up w/ an older version (e.g., 4.1) if you had a new version (e.g. 4.2) installed?

This wouldn't seem to make sense: Lenovo ships a T43 w/ 4.1 and then tells you an upgrade is available (4.2). Does it make sense that once you upgrade you couldn't access any of the backups created with the older version? If so, that's crazy!

I'm writing because I'm about to try to recover data backed up w/ 4.1 with a new install of 4.2. My post is here:

Re-installed Vista Business 64 on my T61p. I kept getting the "No Backups Found" error when I tried to restore from my previous backups (USB drive). I suspected it might be a permission/ownership issue. I ran R&R as Administrator and I can "see" my backups now. This is Vista SP1 and R&R 4.2.

Hope this helps someone else.

Thanks,
