I have a ThinkPad 390X that is basically a parts system and I have a ThinkPad 380Z that I use. Would it be a possibility to swap processors from the ThinkPad 390X (400Mhz) to the ThinkPad 380Z (300Mhz)? Both systems are Pentium-II systems. If this could be done could I get detailed information as to how to do this? I am a PC Tech but really dont know a great deal about these thinkpads. Please advise me further.

Thanks in Advance,

Larry :??:

I don't know the particulars of what you are attempting, but take a look at the following (2) Hardware Maintenance Manuals. Check the part numbers of the CPU cards to see if they appear interchangable.

Hardware Maintenance Manual (November 1999) - ThinkPad 390X

Hardware Maintenance Manual (August 1998) - ThinkPad 380Z

the 390x uses mmc2 form factor, the 380z uses the mmc1 form factor, you cannot interchange the cpus
what you need is a mmc1 333-400max cpu to upgrade the 380z
i tried a celeron mmc1 400 cpu on a tp600 sure enough it posted
however ibm programed some kind of block not allowing the processor to procceed,(schemers!)
didn't stop me when i swapped the cel400 for a p111366 mmc1 though. that booted straight into xp indeed.
infact i sold that laptop fitted with a internal dvd/cdrw,to a friend that was on the verge of ordering a new lenovo,i explained why they are better off with the proven rather than the flimsy, the hundreds they saved and the fact they went for a recycled machine, aiding global warming, add to that no brainer windows reloads(no drivers needed)in 2k,me,xp,2k3 you can see why that solution
contributed to the no regret factor. 8)
the 380z is a top machine with the 128 dell edo ram bringing it to 160 mb.96mb is good for win 98,2k + me(if one can't find the 128mb stick).you can also fit a combo drive in its bay and it will detect it and work beaut,(as long as combo firmware is comparable).same drive swap rule applies to every single thinkpad post 1998).
