Recovery CD's and hidden partition

#1 Post by furrycute » Fri Jul 06, 2007 8:20 am

I am planning to purchase a new hard drive. If I use the Recovery CD's on the new hard drive, will the Recovery CD's also install the hidden partition?

I have another question.

If I use Norton Ghost or Acronis to image my old hard drive to the new hard drive, will the hidden partition be transferred to the new hard drive as well?

Yes, but you have to do it properly.

For Ghost, what kind of settings would you use? Thanks

From Thinkwiki
"The HPA was introduced with the R40, T40 and X30 series of ThinkPads. It is refered to as the Predesktop Area in the BIOS Setup Utility. Recent ThinkPads can have a (hidden) partition that is also called Predesktop Area in the BIOS Setup Utility. That (hidden) partition is not an HPA."

Please correct me if I'm not interpreting the above correctly. So, based on the TP, the Predesktop area is either a "hidden partition" or an "HPA" ..... if you TP has a hidden partition, then GHOST or ARCONIS will work just fine. However, if it's a HPA, then the above programs will not work.

I've tried both w/ my R40 and have yet to be successful.
The recovery cd's should work just fine.

If you want the recovery partition and your old Windows install on your new hard disk, try this. Use the recovery cd's to install the recovery partition and then use Ghost to move your old windows install to the new hard disk.
