Diagnose a screen problem

I have a very thin vertical line appear on the right hand side of this screen...R51...did some searching and the results show that it could be one of many problems...from a column fault - video card or a loose cable to needing a new screen...don't know where to start with them all

The line appears on boot before Windows and is visible also on the Bios screen.

I've run PC Doctor and passed 100% on everything.

Is there another programme i could use to pinpoint the exact problem.

Try to connect external monitor to see whether it is visible as well.

$10 it won't be. A good suggestion, however.

I get this on my X21. Sometimes wiggling the screen or (carefully!) pressing on the back of the screen at the base of the screen where the line is located helps. I've also noticed that the line goes away if I don't move the laptop for a while, but as little as moving the hinges can bring it back.

Personally I'd guess the cable first. Incidentally it's also the cheapest thing to try replacing.

Cheers guys...qviri thanks...tried your suggestions...still there though.

puppy...i no longer have an external monitor to try it with ( typical...had one here until a few weeks ago...tossed it away to make space

three other laptops in the house...don't suppose there's a way to use one of those is there....have searched for info on that but can't find a way for it to be done.

Connecting to a different laptop's screen is sufficiently complicated to be considered impossible for practical purposes.

It's a laptop - can you take it to a friend's, to a library, or in to work and test it there?

Virtually everyone i know has laptops...will take it with me when i visit family later this week....hopefully someone will still have a desktop i can use the monitor from...will post results.

If it's just a thin vertical line, it's an LCD. For some reason R51 LCDs have that problem a lot. I get them in for motherboard replacements, and when I get them booting again, about 1/2 the time, there's a line in the LCD.

Replace the LCD, and it's gone.
