Access Connection is no longer in charge?

I rebooted my laptop (T61-7662-CTO, Vista Business) today after disabling a few services that were eating memory, including Windows Wireless Auto Config. When it came back up, Access Connections is now insisting that Windows is in charge
Also, my laptop travels a lot and AC has made it possible to not garner a huge headache trying to manage all of my profiles, so please no "Don't use Access Connections" garbage here.
and the only way I can get it to connect is by restarting the aforementioned service, but Vista is a bit spotty with my network management and I perfer AC, so how do I make Vista relinquish control to AC? On Windows XP it was easy but I cannot find a similar control in Vista. The current wireless connection is being managed by the Windows Wireless Service or another service.
