Touchpad issue with both T60 AND T42

#1 Post by h00ligan » Fri Aug 31, 2007 7:23 pm

I have recently reinstalled xp on the t42 and vista ultimate on the t60 and both machines exhibit the sporadic behaviour.. it's odd.

Again, this is on two different machines (hence not choosing one forum to post in) both with the latest drivers from lenovo.

Sporadically the touchpad stops responding. The left button for the nipple and the pad both stop working.. it seems to almost turn on tap lock, except even that isn't consistent. Tapping is disabled in the ultranav tab, but then it just turns on, sort of, inconsistently, but the tab still indicates it is off. Rebooting does not rectify, however removing the driver and reinstalling does.

it also appears there may be something to do with the latest catalyst driver. Has anyone else experienced this issue? It's getting VERY frustrating... and is obviously a driver problem given that it's two machines and two os's..

Thoughts?

i just tried to update the t60 to a later driver than lenovo offers via the synaptics website, we'll see how that goes - probably take a day or 2 to surface again... i'll post pack with results.. will be updating the t42 tomorrow.

I have a T42. Synaptics driver version 7.5.17.10 + Lenovo ATI driver 6.14.10.6547. I haven't experienced the touchpad stopped working issue.

well after installing the synaptics driver, i can see what is happening.. the left button is not releasing.. it's getting 'stuck'

it is completely sporadic - and i have removed the palm rest and cleaned all applicable areas - after which it happened again.

I also find it very odd that the t42 would decide to do this at the same time....obviously it's possible both are dying, but more likely there is some weirdo conflict... so strange. One thing I did note is that it occurs in safe mode - but then it seemed to load the real driver not a random ps2 mouse driver...

the thing is, if it was failing i would have thought it would be more consistent in the failure - sometimes it goes 3 days before it acts up , sometimes 3 minutes..

very very odd.

Look for some third party software you have loaded on both laptops which may be causing the problem. Could also be spyware or a virus. I would wipe the harddrive on one of them and reload the OS and drivers. If the touchpad responds ok I would then load my third party apps one at a time and test to see if the problem returns. It's a tedious process but at least you have 2 laptops to work with. :)

here's a strange thing about it -
the lockups where the touchpad seems to be stuck stick - on left click seem to occur when the hard drive is reading - if i disable the touchpad and just use the pointing stick it works fine..

as the hd light flashes i can see the left click indicator light up.

I don't think it's a virus or spyware, both of these machines were just installed.. i do think however it is something lenovo released.. at this point - that's just about the only stuff running at startup.

Launch the UltraNav Wizard, then disable the tap zones on the Touchpad. See if that makes any difference.

You can try to install an older UltraNav driver from C:\IBMTOOLS\drivers\UNAV\SETUP.EXE

You can try one of the generic drivers from the Synaptics website.
http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm

It is possible that some other software on your system is using a driver file with the same name as one of the UltraNav driver files, and this is causing the problem.
