since you're trying an installation, I suppose you want
to boot from the USB cdrom. Two points:
1. supposing usb 1.1, it may not support booting from
the CD without extra power applied somehow
2. if it does, you might try "smart boot manager" that
has been helpful to me in the case of various
machines that normally do not boot from the CD

You might want to check your Bios setting to see that you have USB support enabled, and also check under Boot priority where the USB CD ROM is listed it needs to be before the hard drive.

To sakkara. You really need to provide more information if you want to get good advice here. You do not mention which version of Windows you are trying to install - is it Windows 98 or 98SE? Are you using a Windows Startup floppy disk to boot from? You do not clearly outline the procedure you are currently using and where the problem comes up.

sorry

ok here we go

i have the external usb cd-rom
the floppy boot disk
and the windows 95 and 98 recovery cds
when i try to install from cd with the recovery cd in the drive the floppy recovery starts

after the blue screen asking for language
it gives option if recover from hard drive
or
load usb drivers and boot to dos
i sellect load drivers
screen says please wait .......... and i wait and i wait

nothing happens

i have made a win start up disk which loads the usb drivers and i have managed to load an old copy of windows 95 BUT when it is installed i find i have no cd rom in control panel ??
so need either the 95 drivers OR
if any one can remember back to dos the command to cory the whole windows directory onto the c: drive and i will try that

i have a copy of xp i want to install and when i try it says " this program cant load from dos "

Did you put the IBM USB CD-ROM driver for DOS on the floppy?

i assumed it would be on the ibm recovery floppy as it is the original recovery set that came with the laptop

the syntax is: copy d:\windows c:\ OR copy d:\source\windows c:\
where d = your CD-drive
where (\source\)windows = name of your windows directory on that CD
Any and all subdirectories within that \windows directory will have to be copied manually as well!

If you have the xcopy program at your disposal, you can do it all in one go:
xcopy d:\windows /s /e c:\ OR xcopy d:\source\windows /s /e c:\

I doubt if that's going to work though, because the CD will have all compressed files on it (showing like calc.ex_ instead of calc.exe) that only get de-compressed during a proper install.

The TP240 (unlike the TP240X) needed a CD-ROM with a PCMCIA adapter and cable to be bootable from the CD. That was my experience having owned one some long time ago.

For Windows 98 though, you can delete most everything on the hard drive, make a directory C:\Windows\Options\Cabs and copy the file in the Cabs folder from the 98 CD into the same folder on the hard drive on the TP40. Then run setup from that Cabs folder and it will install Windows 98. The big issue will be: Can you access the CD at all (not boot from it)? or do you have to copy the mismash onto floppies first? (very painful). ... JDH

I could be wrong I guess, but I believe the problem is that your copy of Windows 95 does not support USB.

I don't think availablity of a CD driver will solve the problem. As far as I know, the IBM recovery disk will expect to boot itself directly from startup. That means the BIOS start up sequence must be set for a USB CD device to be the first to be attempted - if the BIOS has that option.

I had a similer problem after acquiring an X31 with no Operating System installed. In that case I used a Toshiba PCMCIA CD reader to install XP. That used a Freecom PCMCIA driver that I may still have somewhere - and you'd need a PCMCIA CD reader for it to work. But I can't remember whether the driver was installed under DOS, which would mean the IBM recovery disk would still not be useable.

Do you not have an XP install disk?

jtt3011; this thread is nearly 18 months old. Why are you trying to answer the OP's question now?
I believe this thread is a bit stale.
