Hi all,

First of all, I am a newbie here. Nice to see such an active community! Now, the sad part.

I recently bought an X60 - 1709 model.. may be 6 months back. Sadly, a week back I accidently broke the lcd. I can see a big crack in the underlying LCD under the screen. I cannot see anything on the screen now, even though it still lights up. I used an external monitor to check if everything else works and thankfully it does.

Also, unluckily, I didn't take any insurance plan when buying the laptop. I am sure its still under warranty, but not sure if thats of any help in this case.

Of course I don't want to throw the laptop like this. It would be really cool if I can myself replace the broken LCD (I think I can, if proper manual is accessible). Can anyone here offer some advice on how to go about it? Should I call up the thinkpad people and tell them about it? Will they offer replacement.. for some cost? I also found a google sponsored website called thinkpadservice.com which claims that they can replace any 12" lcd for $395. But I am not sure if I can trust these people. Anyone has any idea about them?

Screentek is selling the lcd for $435 (the part number matches with part numbers on the thinkpad site). Is that the only option?

first, check out the laptop guy..
see his advert in the banner, above..
he might be a place to get a second opinion on cost to repair..

second, you MIGHT be able to replace the display yourself..
but be careful..

you will want the hardware maintenance manual..
get it at the lenovo support site..

and, third, lenovo will offer to repair it for a price..
probably a high price..

EBay LCD Deal

Twice I've bought used display lids (complete) on ebay. The first one was for a ThinkPad 600E and the second one for a T42. I believe (at least generally speaking) that replacing the entire display lid is the easier than replacing the LCD by itself. I don't remember what I paid for the 600E display, but I believe it was around $60. I bought the T42 display for $117 shipped. I think ebay is the way to go to get the best bang for your buck.

You have been provided with gold advice from the gentlemen above. IBM is going to charge you $475 or more for lcd replacement (if interested EasyServ can provide you with an estimate).

I too suggest to buy from ebay. LCD replacement is not any rocket science, just follow the instructions in the HMM precisely and you would be good to go:

Hi, Can you tell me whats the difference between the 'complete' display lid and just the lcd? What do I search for to find the display lid for x60 on ebay?

Well, the complete display lid has a lid, LCD panel, cables, hinges, a wifi antenna, and possibly a bluetooth antenna . The LCD panel does not. I just took a look on EBay, your best bet is the panel I linked to earlier in this thread. I didn't see any complete display lids. If you are not handy with a screwdriver and following directions then this LCD panel only repair is not for you. Otherwise I'd say it is medium difficulty for a handy person. Replacing the entire lid assembly is easy. What is the machine type/model listed on the bottom of your machine?
