T60 & T60P can't get access connection to work with WIFI

Ok so we have about a dozen new T60 and T60p of various configurations. they all came with Vista which we are not supporting.
So I'm loading XP SP2 on these machines, all works well except I can't get Access connection to talk to the wireless NIC (Intel 3945)
If I use windows or the intel wifi manager then I can connect to our wireless lan, if I use access connections, it tries but then says it can't power on the NIC (the NIC is powered on).
Spent 4+ hours on the phone with Lenovo tech support, they can't figure it out either. Sent 1 machine back to lenovo for repair, came back the same way.
Does anyone know how to get access connection to work with the wifi nics on the T60s? We've had numerous T40, T41, T42, T43, X40, X41 that worked great with access connection. but not the new T60 series
thanks!
