Cannot access internet after reinstall Win2000

After reinstalling Win2000 Pro from original CD (not T22 CD) all my original Thinkpad files are there. Why Win2K doesn't find the drivers is a mystery. I manually installed the XVA screen driver, so that is OK.
Also I manually reinstalled all the Thinkpad utilities, Hotkeys, Configuration utility, power management utility, etc. All work fine.

BUT I have been trying on and off for 3 days to get back on to the Internet. In many years I've never run into this problem!!!
I cannot get Win to recognize my Ethernet adapter or Wireless adapter ("Programs" recognize the Wireless Adapter program and the adapter light is blinking - I reinstalled from the original CD.) "Device Manager|Network adapter" shows Adapter OK, BUT I still cannot connect!

"device manager" shows ? for Ethernet Controller
I downloaded the Intel driver package for the Pro/100 SP Adapter, but cannot install - I get message "Windows Management Instrumentation service is not running"
The WMI is in HIVESYS.inf in C:\I386, but I can't recover it.

I was forced to reinstall Win2K when repairs of some WINNT files that got damaged, failed. Up to that moment both Ethernet and wireless connections worked fine

Any suggestions? .
My ancient, slow HP desktop is connecting fine, so I can send this message.
I wish I were sailing!!!!

From Microsoft: Windows Management Instrumentation service is not running as LocalSystem.

I suggest you read the explicit installation instructions for Ethernet driver for Windows 2000 from lenovo.

When I first moved to Windows 2000, it wasn't easy, proper drivers were not available, my modem, printer became incompatible. A good technique at that time was to upgrade Windows 2000 from Windows 98 with all drivers installed. You can me if I'm wrong but I think you had been using factory pre-installed oem version of Windows on your thinkpad T22 previously.

rvengineer is on the right track. There were several machines back then that came with Windows 98 (A20m for example) that would not do a clean Windows 2000 install. I did one once, and installed the Windows 98 NIC driver from the install CD and then upgraded the driver. Dicey, but it worked. ... JDH

Thank you, Rvengineer, for your prompt response and suggestion.
I did what you suggested and I was able to get back on the Internet.
I should have posted on this forum in the first place, instead of the T2x forum.
However I am now completely baffled. The old problem that caused me to reinstall W2K, and which had been cured, suddenly came back. I don't understand it.
I suppose my only recourse is to reformat the C: drive and make a clean new installation. Obviously there is some rogue piece of a file still hanging in there, which was not removed by new Windows installation.
To answerour question, yes the computer had the original T22 Windows on it. Unfortunately I don't have a recovery disk.
